Fight For Your Family
“Therefore, I position men behind the lower parts of the wall at the openings. I set people according to their families with their swords and their spears and their bows …I said to the nobles, leaders, and people, “ Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord is great and awesome. Fight for your brother, fight for your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses…. Whenever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us” (Nehemiah 4:13-14, 20).
Temptation. Fighting. Crumbling marriages. Teenage rebellion. We hear so much about a world that is spiraling out of control. We are told there is nothing we can do to restore what we once had. They say our defenses are weak against the wiles of the enemy - the devil – and warned that he will infiltrate the very existence of our lives and the lives of our loved ones. NEVERTHELESS… the Bible says that if you’ll fight for your family, “Our God will fight for us.”
Nehemiah remembered how the wall around Jerusalem was once a proud fortress and the principle line of defense from attacking enemies. But what he encountered was altogether different than what he remembered. He saw torn down walls in need of repair. Stranger still was this tug on his heart that told Him that God had chosen him to do the work of repair.
To make a long story short, with God’s enabling he was able to rebuild this wall in fifty-two days. More important was the rebuilding of peoples lives and their spirituality, and renewing their faith. Just like Nehemiah rebuilt the wall, you too can rebuild your wall, because no matter what the enemy has done to your family and done to your home, with God’s help you can rebuild a fortress that the enemy cannot penetrate.
There is a cause for you worth fighting for and that is protection of your family. If the home is the number one priority of the devil, then we better make sure it’s the number one priority in our lives. You better be committed to, God and you better be committed to your marriage and your family. If this is a weak area then the enemy will make himself right at home and divide and conquer your family. Be mindful that we have an awesome God and that the Bible promises that, “ No weapon formed against us will prosper.” We have the promise of God of victory in the home that is built upon the Rock.
How do We Fight?
- Stay in their business, stay in their lives. If correction is in order, stand up and make that correction.
- Fight with love - We fight for our families because the Bible says when we fight, that God will fight for our families. You fight with love for your family. God is love!
- Don’t wait, DO IT NOW - Be totally aware of dangerous distractions that take you and your family away at critical times when the family needs to be in the Word and be in the house of God.
Connection Questions
- The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Are there areas in your family structure that are struggles that seem too overwhelming to conquer on your own?
- Everyone is busy with daily commitments. Where do you see your priorities today? Do they need to change? Do they put God and family first?
- What habits have you instilled into your family home to foster God’s guidance and leading of a spiritual home and lifestyle?
Final Thought
There is no better time than RIGHT NOW to reconstruct and rebuild your “family” wall. Philemon 1:2 states, “To the church that is in your house, to the church that (meets) in your house.” Paul wrote mostly to churches but this was written to someone’s house. Is there church in your house? Where are your footprints leading your family? Your marriage? It’s about destroying the enemy. Don’t give up the fight; continue rebuilding your lives in a godly fashion. Turn to God. Let him fight your battles. But don’t give up. God says in Romans 5:20, “Where sin abounds, grace does much more abound.” Joshua 24:15 states, “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” We may not have answers, but God does. We need God’s help. He said that if we would fight for our family that God would fight for us. What a great promise for us to live under.
