Does God Really Care?
“I am the good shepherd; and I know my sheep…” John 10:14
In John 6, thousands of people followed Jesus into a wilderness area. After He had talked for hours, He was concerned about their need for food. Verse 5 says, “Then Jesus lifted up His eyes and, seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?’ But He said this to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.”
Philip answered Him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” There were easily 15,000 hungry people. Jesus was testing Philip. He was basically saying, “I want to see if you really trust me when you don’t know what to do.” The fact that the Word says, “He already had in mind what He was going to do,” should bring us great consolation. It’s comforting to know that God knows what He’s doing and that he cares about our lives.
The disciples didn’t know how to deal with the situation. They only saw an overwhelming challenge. They knew there was no grocery store nearby. They couldn’t even afford to buy a pack of crackers to pass out. They understood their situation, but Jesus knew what He would do before they ever got into the problem. God knows everything. The Bible says that by Him, all things exist. Before time, there was God. Before angels, there was God. Before space and galaxies, there was God. Before creation, there was God. He spoke everything into existence.
You may be facing a great challenge causing you to have sleepless nights filled with worry and fear. You could be experiencing issues with your children, finances, or health. You may feel helpless and have no clue what to do, but God knows. Sometimes it seems like God gets mighty silent when we need Him the most. He tends to try us, prove us, and see how much we’ll trust Him. But He has a plan and knows exactly what He’s going to do.
