The Power of a Little Further
“He went a little further, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.” Mark 14:35 (KJV)
There are moments in life when you reach a familiar place, a comfortable spot where you’ve stopped many times before. For Jesus and His disciples, the Garden of Gethsemane was that kind of place. It was known simply as “the place.” It had shade, quiet, and space to rest. But on the night of His greatest trial, Jesus didn’t stop at the familiar. Scripture says He went a little further.
That detail may seem small, but it holds a powerful truth for your life. Sometimes your breakthrough, your encounter with God, your deepest strength, comes only when you step beyond what’s comfortable. Jesus walked just a stone’s throw beyond where He usually stopped, and in that place He poured His heart out to the Father: “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but Your will be done.”
Going a little further means pressing past the easy prayers and offering the surrendered ones.
It means worshipping when you don’t feel like it, forgiving when it would be easier to stay bitter, choosing faith when doubt surrounds you. That little bit further is often where you meet God in the most powerful way.
So today, ask yourself: where is God calling you to take one more step? Is it in prayer, in faith, in obedience, or in service to others? Don’t settle in “the place” of comfort when He’s calling you beyond. Like Jesus, go a little further. That’s where God will meet you.
If you’ve never taken that step of surrender through baptism, maybe that’s your “little further.” Maybe God is calling you to get involved in a small group. Maybe you feel a pull towards divorce care ministry because your heart hasn’t healed. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it, because it’s there that God reveals His will and His power in your life.
Prayer: Father, give me the courage to go beyond what feels comfortable and take that next step of faith. Teach me to surrender my will to Yours, and meet me in that place where only You can strengthen me. Amen.
