Families That Succeed
“She said to her husband, ‘I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.’” 2 Kings 4:9 (NIV)
You want your family to succeed. You want your home to be a place where peace, love, and faith flourish. The story in 2 Kings 4 shows you how. A woman and her husband decided to build a room in their home for the Prophet Elisha. It was a simple space with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. But what they really built was something greater—a place for the presence of God to dwell under their roof.
Your home has both the natural and the spiritual. Naturally, you take care of bills, meals, laundry, school, and work. But if all you ever have is the natural, you will miss what makes your family strong. You need the spiritual. You need to invite God into your everyday life so that your house is not just a home but a sanctuary.
Look at the furniture they placed in that room. The bed reminds you that your home should be a place of rest. Not a place filled with arguing and chaos, but a place where you and your family can find peace. Spiritually, the bed also represents a place where you can lay down your crisis and trust God to carry your burdens.
The chair points to communication. Families that succeed talk to one another. You need conversations with your spouse and your children. But you also need to talk with God. Your home should be a place where prayer is natural, where you sit and share your heart with the Lord.
The table is where food is shared. Yes, you feed your family physically, but you also feed them spiritually. This is not about long sermons in your living room. It is about weaving God’s Word into everyday life, teaching your children when they rise, when they walk, and when they lie down.
The lamp represents light. Darkness gives the enemy room to work. But the Word of God brings light into your home. Light drives out sin, secrecy, and despair. It creates an atmosphere where God’s presence shines.
A successful family does not separate the natural and the spiritual. You need both under the same roof. When you build a place for God in your home, His presence will bring life, order, and blessing to your family.
Prayer:
Lord, I want my home to be a place where You are welcome.
Help me bring balance between the natural and the spiritual. Let my house be filled with rest, communication, nourishment, and light. Build my family to succeed by keeping You at the center. Amen.
