Love Never Fails
“And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins.” Peter 4:8
I Corinthians 13:1-2 says, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.” Love is a powerful force.
A Hall of Fame baseball player made history because he refused to allow his circumstances to bring him down. He played for the American Negro League for twenty years back in the early 40s when there was still segregation. After the first African American, Jackie Robinson was allowed to play in the Major League, Leroy Satchel Paige was drafted to play for the Cleveland Indians. He was a pitcher, and one team decided they would intimidate him. Many people during that time, including players in the league, still did not want African Americans playing in the Majors.
But Paige was not easily intimidated, and he responded by having his entire infield go into the dugout and told his outfield to sit down. One by one, he struck out each batter, and he ended up pitching a no-hitter. He went down in baseball’s Hall of Fame as one of the greatest pitchers of all time. He once said, “Work like you don’t need the money, dance like nobody’s watching, and love like you’ve never been hurt.” Leroy Paige did not let prejudice and hatred stop him from living his best life. He played, danced, and loved without bitterness, unfettered by offense.
In this life, you will have to learn to love like you’ve never been hurt because it is inevitable that someone will disappoint you. Someone will hurt or offend you deeply, and when that happens, you will have to decide to love anyhow. Love covers a multitude of sins. Love is the most powerful force on Earth, and it can overcome pain, anger, fear, and bitterness. Love is God’s greatest weapon. Love will protect you from all the evils of this world.
