Life Is Beautiful
“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5
History records a remarkable account of the destruction of a powerful city. Back in the ancient days, they didn't have security like we do now. The only way to secure cities was to build walls and then place something called “watchmen” on the wall. The primary responsibility of the watchmen was to look out as far as he could see in every direction and give a warning if impending danger was approaching. One day, a watchman looked out and saw something that could be a threat, but he didn’t give warning. He thought to himself that he would be resented by the people because sounding the alarm would shut down commerce, money-making, and the activity of the city. And so, he just decided to remain silent. He said nothing. Then when it became obvious that there was an imminent threat about to take place, it was too late. The enemy were upon them. They could do nothing. The whole city perished and there now stands a small memorial that reads: "Here stood a town that was destroyed by silence."
If America is going to be destroyed, it will happen because of the silence of the pulpits and the righteous minority called Christians who are failing to lift their voice and say with great passion, "We are going to protect the life of the unborn." We are all flawed people. We all need God's grace. But together we can make our world a place that values life, because life is beautiful.
In Jeremiah 1:5 God says: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born I sanctified you. I ordained you to be a prophet to the nations." Psalms 139:13 says: "You formed me in the inward parts. You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your eyes saw my substance (the Hebrew word is embryo) being yet unformed." The church must stand firm in our love for the unborn.
On a side note, if you have had an abortion there is grace and forgiveness for you. You may have failed, but you're not a failure. You may have made a mistake, but you're not a mistake. We serve the God of another chance, and another chance, and another chance.
We dare not be silent about the killing of innocent children. We can’t let the epitaph on America be, “Our nation was destroyed because the church became silent." There are states trying to pass legislation to kill babies in the third trimester, right at the point of birth. Some states even say that after a baby is born it's totally okay to then decide whether it lives or dies. If the world isn’t ashamed to take that stand, we should not be ashamed to proclaim, “Those lives matter to God, and they matter to us.”
