God’s Will To Fill
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10
In 2015, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady celebrated with his team after defeating the Indianapolis Colts 45 to 7. They were headed to the Super Bowl, and everyone fully expected the media to buzz about the two teams that had made it- the Seahawks and the Patriots. But news broke later that afternoon that the footballs used by the Patriots had been deflated. This news gained so much attention that it was given its own name- “Deflategate.” It was alleged that someone took a needle and purposely deflated nine out of ten footballs in order to give Tom Brady an advantage. The huge controversy eventually resulted in Brady being suspended for four games, and the team was fined 1 million dollars. They also had to forfeit two draft selections the following year. The incident stole the moment of victory from the Patriots and disappointed football lovers nationwide.
The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He is the liar of all liars and the cheat of all cheats, and he works vigorously to deflate every ounce of spiritual life that is in your relationship with God. He wants to deflate your faith, deplete your joy, and destroy your family. If you look up the word “deflate” in Webster’s dictionary, it means “To let the air out of. To reduce in size and effectiveness. To suddenly feel a loss of confidence or less important.” That’s what the enemy and sin do to a person. They drain out what God has put in us.
Jesus said, “I have come that you may have life and life more abundantly.” It is God’s desire to fill you. The word “fill” is used 468 times in the Bible. Air and wind represent life, and it is the enemy’s goal to deflate the life that God has placed inside of you. This started all the way back in the Garden of Eden. God formed Adam out of the dust of the earth and then breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Suddenly, man became a living soul. That started a beautiful relationship between man and God. Every day, Adam would walk through the garden in fellowship with God. Satan saw this and hatched a plan to puncture the soul of man and deflate the air, the breath of God, from his life. So the serpent came and manipulated and mesmerized Eve as she took the fruit and ate it. Then Adam ate it, and sin began to suck the breath of life out of mankind. Suddenly, Adam and Eve were so deflated that they were covering themselves with fig leaves, hiding from God, and blaming each other.
The enemy is still doing the same thing today. He wants to deflate what God has put in you. He wants to let the air out of your soul and reduce you in size and effectiveness. He’s trying to use sin to make you lose your confidence and feel less important to God. Never let the world, the flesh, or the devil deflate out of you what God has put in you.
