Fighting Fear with Faith
"When I am afraid, I will trust in You." Psalm 56:3 (NKJV)
Fear is real. It is mentioned over 600 times in the Bible. That includes both fear itself and the command not to be afraid. God knew fear could cripple your mind if you let it. But here is something you might not have realized: fear is a God-given emotion. Fear in itself is not evil. It can be good. It is there to keep you alive.
Think about a deer during hunting season. The deer’s fear is what keeps it alert and alive. That’s the healthy kind of fear God designed you to have when danger comes. But there is a big difference between the emotion of fear and the spirit of fear. The emotion is natural. When bad news comes or a difficult situation arises, it is normal to feel afraid. But the spirit of fear is different. That is from the enemy. The Bible calls it evil forebodings — a constant dread that something terrible is going to happen. This low-grade fear can take over your mind and heart, and it is not from God.
You were not meant to live that way. The way you fight it is by not letting fear do all the talking. Every time fear tries to dominate your mind, you have to say out loud, “I will trust You, Lord.” You have to confront fear with the Word of God. The more you confront it, the weaker fear becomes.
When you speak God’s Word against fear, it loses its power.
Life will bring moments where fear comes. It may be a surgery, a financial struggle, or a hard conversation. You will feel fear. That is okay. But do not let it grow into torment and dread. Fear can take hold of you, but you can break free. So when fear comes, say with David, “When I am afraid, I will trust in You.” Trust Him even when fear is real. Because your trust in God is stronger than any fear the enemy tries to bring.
Prayer: “Lord, when fear comes, help me to trust you. Strengthen my faith and give me peace that overcomes all dread. I choose to trust you, even in the hardest moments. Amen”.
