Clues to Finding Your Perfect Match: Day 1

There are five areas of compatibility that I believe are absolutely essential for a successful marriage. Today we’ll talk about two of them. Many of these are directly or indirectly referred to in Scripture. Whether you are single and looking for the spouse God has for your life or have been married 50 years, these are good reminders of God’s perfect plan. In fact, if you are married, these are goals to strive for every day.

1. Spiritual compatibility. God’s Word commands us, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). You need to find and be with someone of the same faith, values, and moral system. When Jesus is Lord of your life, He changes the way you act, handle your finances, and everything in your life. If you or your spouse don’t have God at the center of your life, your marriage can’t work the way God intended. He has to be the center of your relationship.

2. Character compatibility. Red flags should go up if you are dating someone and they violate your trust. Anyone who fails to show you honor and respect or who doesn’t value morals is not worth the investment. Think about the stability of your future family if you marry someone with a poor work ethic. Character matters. You can save yourself heartache if you end a relationship with someone of poor character before it goes too far.
