The Ready Heart: Living in Light of The Return of Christ
For many, the study of the "End Times" is shrouded in mystery or even a sense of dread. But at the heart of the Gospel, the promise of Jesus’ return isn't meant to spark fear; it is meant to anchor us in a radical, unwavering hope. When we understand that history is moving toward a triumphant conclusion, our present struggles lose their power to overwhelm us.
This hope is perhaps most tenderly expressed in our grief. We don’t have to wonder where our loved ones in Christ are or if we will see them again.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”
This scripture provides a beautiful filter for our sorrow. It tells us that those who have "fallen asleep," those who have shed their earthly shell, are not just waiting in a void; they are with Him. And when He returns, they return with Him. Knowing that the moment they left us was the moment they were united with Christ gives us the confidence to face the empty chairs in our homes with an eternal perspective.
Confidence in the Present Struggle
When we live with a ready heart, we recognize that our life on earth is short, but our future is secure. This perspective changes how we handle our present circumstances. If we truly believe that 1 Corinthians 15:52 is true, that “in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet... the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed,” then the pressures of today start to feel lighter.
We find the strength to walk in obedience because we love the One who is coming for us. As Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commands.” Our obedience isn't a heavy burden; it's a daily act of devotion.
The Urgency Filter
This future reality isn't just a theological concept to store away; it is a practical filter that should strain every decision we make. When we live in light of His return, the luxury of time disappears, and a holy urgency takes its place. This filter dictates how we treat the stranger in our path, how we serve our communities, and how we love those within our own four walls. We no longer have the time to harbor bitterness or delay a kind word.
If we truly believe the horizon is glowing with His arrival, then every day must be lived to its fullest, not for our own glory, but for His. Our integrity in the secret moments and our compassion in the public ones are all refined by the realization that our window of opportunity is closing. We don’t just wait for the end; we work as if the end is at the door.
The Eternal Filter
If we truly believe that Christ could return at any moment, that belief forces us to ask the hard questions in the middle of our mundane routines:
-
Does my integrity hold up when no one is watching?
-
Would I be comfortable being "caught up" in the middle of this specific thought or action?
-
Does my reaction to a frustrating driver or a difficult coworker reflect a heart that is expecting its King?
Living with this "eternal filter" isn't outdated or "old-school," it is a radical way to reclaim the purpose of our lives. We only get one chance to walk this earth. This life on earth is the only "hell" the believer will ever know. Let’s live in a way that reflects that reality, honoring Him so completely that our lives serve as a beacon for others to find their way home. 1 John 3:2-3 reminds us:
“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.”
Our Horizon Hope
Whether we are navigating a violent world that feels like Luke 21:25 with its “anguish and perplexity,” or simply navigating a difficult Tuesday, our hope remains the same. We are not a people who are lost in the dark; we are a people looking toward the horizon.
We serve a God who is not just a historical figure, but a returning King. Because of the return of Christ, we can walk through our present trials with a confidence that says the Lion of Judah is coming, and He is bringing our restoration with Him. Let your heart be ready, your lamp be full, and your life be a testament to the hope that never fades.
