Liar or Lord?
“Then He said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’” John 20:27
Most skeptics will agree that Jesus was either Lord or He was a liar. The way Christians prove that Jesus is Lord is the resurrection. Critics say that the disciples stole the body of Jesus. But the problem with that theory is that if they did, they only got a corpse. Corpses don’t inspire anybody. Corpses don’t cause people like Peter, who was a coward and had denied Jesus three times, to then turn around and boldly preach to 3,000 people on the day of Pentecost.
A dead body could not inspire a person like Thomas, who previously doubted that Jesus rose from the dead, to go to India and Persia to preach the gospel. Even though he faced death, he never denied Jesus. He was hacked to death with a pick axe because of his radical faith. Would a corpse inspire him to do that? The other disciples were stoned and crucified upside down for spreading the message of Jesus. Every one of them died the death of a martyr except one. It was so real to them that they gave their life for it. They were willing to be tortured and die horrible deaths, not over a corpse, but over a living Savior.
The disciples had seen it all happen. They saw Him die, and then they saw Him resurrected. Jesus ate with them and spent time with them after He had risen from the grave.
There was not a doubt in their mind that Jesus was the Son of God.
He appeared to 552 people in 13 different locations after His resurrection. They even watched Him fly away into the clouds to Heaven. Why else would ordinary working men who had never previously known this man named Jesus, give their whole life to spreading His message? Who would willingly give their life for a lie?
