God-Ordained Opportunities

“Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.” 2 Samuel 23:20

Deep inside the heart of each person is the desire to do something great with their life. Unfortunately, many people allow fear to hold them back from having all that God has for them. Benaiah was the opposite of those types of people. He was a lion chaser. Most people would never chase a lion. A full-grown male lion can weigh up to 600 pounds, run 35 miles per hour, leap 30 feet in the air, have claws that can rip flesh into pieces, and teeth that can crush bones. The odds were against him. It was a snowy day, so this warrior did not even have the advantage of a firm footing or familiar ground, but something in him made him take on the lion.

Maybe you have a “lion” looking at you. Perhaps you have dreamt of opening your own business, going back to school, starting a ministry, or adopting a child for many years, but you are intimidated by the unknown. This may be unfamiliar territory, and you may think it is safer to stay in your comfort zone. But it is important to keep reading this story because a couple of verses later, we see that King David appointed Benaiah as the captain of his personal security force.

King David probably looked through several resumes, but none could top Benaiah’s.

The lion was linked to his destiny.

God is in the resume-building business. He uses past challenges to prepare us for future assignments. Opportunities always come disguised as scary “lions.” A big dream will usually scare you to death, but you must decide, “Am I going to let fear cause me to back up, or am I going to chase the lion?”
