The Path To Greatness (Part 2)
“But Elisha said, ‘As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.’” 2 Kings 2:2
After Elijah chose Elisha to be his predecessor, Elisha began faithfully serving the man of God. When it looked like he was doing nothing and everybody was talking about Elijah and his remarkable ministry, God had His eye on Elisha and the seemingly insignificant tasks he faithfully fulfilled. When God has much for you to do, He starts with little. He watches what you do with the little because God knows if you’re not faithful in the small things, He cannot trust you with the big stuff. If you’re not diligent, fired up, and excited about the little place where God has you, you can forget seeing bigger things because it doesn’t happen until you outgrow where you are.
The Bible tells us, “A man makes room for him.” (Proverbs 18:16) When God bestows greatness on your life, He rarely does it quickly. He chooses to take you through frustrating days when you feel like you’re spinning your wheels. These are the times that separate the committed from the non-committed. God’s prerequisite for greatness is being faithful in small things. We want everything to be quick, but sometimes God wants us to be faithful where He has us.
Don’t be intimidated or jealous of other people’s success. Just serve and be faithful in the small things, and God will form you into a person who can handle greater things. As the time drew near for Elijah to leave the earth, Elisha asked him for a double portion of his spirit. After years of serving in the shadow of Elijah’s ministry, God granted Elisha’s request, and he went on to do even greater things for God. One should note that Elijah told Elisha in order for him to receive his anointing, he would have to be present with him when he left. He was giving Elisha a challenge to be faithful. He would have to be at Elijah’s side every minute of the day, working alongside him to get that blessing. Don’t devalue where you are currently at. God could be positioning you for a greater purpose.
