What the Holy Spirit Wants to Do Through You

Did you know you can be in the presence of God and not get the benefits until circumstances arise that require His intervention?

He has a way of getting your attention even when you didn’t know He was there. At the famous wedding party where Jesus performed His first miracle, Jesus wasn’t the guest of honor. Most people probably didn’t even realize He was there—until there was a need. When the party stopped because the wine ran out, Jesus was the only one who could intervene. In the Bible, wine represents sustainable Joy. And when the joy was gone, only Jesus could restore it!

Jesus argued with His mother, “My hour has not yet come,” when she urged Him to do something about the crashing party. But, alas, it was His time. There was something missing from this extravagant celebration. The intoxication of the moment had quite literally run dry. Then, it was time for Jesus to do what only He can. He gave them what they were missing.

What about you? Has your joy run out? Has the life been drained from your party? Do you feel like you are just going through the motions without purpose or pleasure? Jesus is waiting. And what He can give you, will be better than anything you’ve experienced before. Your future can be greater than your past.

Jesus took six empty ceremonial pots, the pots they used to wash themselves before entering the temple, and turned the only thing they had into something better than anything they’d ever had! He used a symbol of their old religion, their old rituals, their old habits, to perform His first miracle! He turned ordinary water into wine. Not just any wine, it was the best!

Listen, perhaps you are in a routine. Maybe you make all the right moves, keep all the right spiritual disciplines like going to church, praying, fasting, living righteously … but you still feel empty. The motions alone are not enough.

Maybe that’s not you. Maybe you have given up on all those things because you couldn’t find joy in it. Maybe you haven’t darkened the door of a church in ages, and praying seems useless to you. Just like Jesus was standing in the corner when the wine ran dry, He’s there with you. He’s been at the “party” the whole time. It doesn’t matter if you’ve acknowledged Him or not, He’s there.

When the servants at the wedding of Cana took the new wine Jesus had made to the master of the banquet he exclaimed, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now” (John 2:10). The wine Jesus made was better than anything they’d had before. They thought the bridegroom had saved the best for last. Are you ready for that? Are you ready for the days ahead to the best days of your life? Then trade in the old, for the new!

When you’re ready for Him to fill your old pots with new wine, He can. When you’re ready to trade in your way for His way, you can. When you’re empty enough, you’ll realize only Jesus can fill you with something that will last, something that will be better than anything you’ve ever experienced.
