How to Affair Proof Your Marriage
The honeymoon only lasts so long. There are reasons people label newlyweds as a bit naive, with their heads in the clouds. “True love,” they say. But love can be blinding when not grounded in the Truth.
The success of any marriage is dependent on the submission and surrender of the two involved. And those two things are difficult. If we are not careful, Satan can steal away the sacredness in lieu of a cheap thrill.
Adultery is more present in our modern-day world than ever before. Widely accepted, it floods our subconsciousness through television and social media. It is considered normal, but it is far from harmless.
Marriage is a covenant where two become one. You cannot violate the covenant without devastating both parties to some degree. Though adultery can certainly be forgiven, scars are imminent. I’ve never counseled an individual through that crisis who didn’t deeply regret their decision to be unfaithful.
That is not to say there isn’t hope if you have found yourself in a situation where you made some bad decisions. The greatest earthly king in the Old Testament fell to this, and made a big mess afterwards to cover up. Yet, it was in his honesty God brought about true freedom.
In Psalms 51, David writes a beautiful song that expresses his repentance, “Cleanse me, O God, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.”
You know, Satan would love for you to stay stuck and condemned, but we know that Christ’s sacrifice is big enough to cover all sins, infidelity included. If you have made a mistake, God is ready to forgive you! Repent today and turn back to Him. Endless grace and forgiveness is waiting.
To make a marriage work, there must be shared respect, responsibility, romance and resolve. The trying times are not the time to stop trying! If you feel like you are in the middle of a storm, hang on. Together, choose to put on the full armor of God “that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the enemy” (Ephesians 6:11 ESV).
Now that my friend… is true love.
