Memorial Stones of God’s Faithfulness

"And Joshua said to all the people, ‘This stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke to us. It shall be therefore a witness against you, lest you deny your God.’" Joshua 24:27 (NKJV)

Throughout the book of Joshua, we see a beautiful pattern of memorial stones. Every time God performed a miracle or delivered His people, Joshua would take stones and build a memorial. These stones were not decorations. They were silent witnesses. They stood as testimony that God had spoken, God had promised, and God had done exactly what He said He would do.

When God opened the Jordan River and His people walked across on dry ground, Joshua set up stones so future generations would see and remember. When enemies were defeated, when promises were fulfilled, when manna fell from heaven, when water flowed from the rock, God’s people built memorials to say, “The Lord has been faithful to us.” Joshua told the people, “This stone has heard the words of the Lord.” What a thought. Stones that do not speak still testify. They silently declare God’s faithfulness.

We need memorial stones in our own lives. Not literal rocks necessarily, but moments we mark as evidence of God’s hand. We need to remember the prayers He answered, the doors He opened, the storms He calmed, the ways He carried us when we could not walk on our own. These become memorials in our hearts and homes. They remind us and our children of the God who kept us.

If your walls could talk, what stories would they tell? Nights of prayer. Tears cried for your children. Moments you thought you would break, but God sustained you. Accidents you survived. Addiction you overcame. Dark places where God’s light reached you. All these are silent witnesses. You are still here.

You are living proof that God has been faithful.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares, you have already come. Grace brought you this far, and grace will lead you home. Like Joshua, you can say today, “Thus far the Lord has helped me.” Build a memorial in your heart. Tell your children what God has done. Let the stones of your life testify that the Lord has been faithful.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for every victory and every moment of grace. Help me remember all the ways You have been faithful to me. May my life be a living memorial to Your goodness and mercy. Amen.
