How To Be A Giant Slayer (Part 3)

“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’” 1 Samuel 16:7

David was a giant killer because he did what most don’t do. If you’re going to be a giant killer, you have to be the same in the dark as you are in the light. David was able to march out in front of the whole nation and face Goliath, one of the enemy’s most seasoned warriors, because he had faced lions and bears when no one was watching. You have to defeat your personal lions and bears before you can go out and defeat a giant. If you can win in the secret places of your life, you will be victorious when big challenges come. If you can maintain a regular prayer life and stay in the word, then when a giant challenge comes, you will be ready for it.

When David fought the lion and the bear, no one was around but God. It was the secret battles that David kept winning. He had character. Character is what you do in the dark. Character is what you do when you think nobody is watching. You must be a man or woman of great character if you’re going to be a giant slayer. If you want to do great things with your life, start with what you do when you are alone.

When David told King Saul he would fight Goliath, King Saul tried to get him to wear his armor. But David basically said, “This isn’t who I am.” As representatives of Christ, we must not act one way in front of Christian people and another in front of unsaved people. You shouldn’t change the way you talk or dress depending on who you are around. You should be the same no matter who you are with. You shouldn’t have two playlists- one filled with church music and another filled with filth. You shouldn’t use certain language around one crowd and another when you’re around a different crowd. You have to be in the light who you are in the dark, and when those two match up, you will be able to do mighty things in this world.

David went on to be a great king and went down in history as “a man after God’s own heart.” Psalms 78:72 says, “And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” To make an impact on this world, you need more than talent. You need to have the character and heart of God.
