When You’re Out of Words, Pray the Word
When You’re Out of Words, Pray the Word
Have you ever been in a tight place where life feels like it knocks the wind out of you? In those moments, words can feel impossible. It’s as if our humanity impedes our ability to commune with the Lord. Maybe a situation hurts too deeply. Maybe you were blindsided by betrayal, you’re staring at bills you can’t pay, or you’ve received a diagnosis you never expected.
What do you pray in the moments that feel so far from Eden? In the muck and mire, how do you seek Him when you can’t quiet your own mind?
Oh friend, that is when the power of short prayers breaks through. What do you pray when words feel hard?
Your Weapon of Memory
When our own words fail us, we are invited to lean into His. Pray the Word of God! This is why it is imperative to commit Scripture to memory. We must equip ourselves now so the Word can carry us later. Just as David encouraged himself in the cave, we must be able to reach into our spirits and pull out truth when the lights go out.
Where to start?
- In a season of loss? "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18)
- The Short Prayer: “Lord, I am crushed, but I thank You for being close to me right here in the pieces.”
- Has someone walked out on you? "I will never leave you nor forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5)
- The Short Prayer: “Lord, I feel abandoned, but I borrow Your promise: You are here. You haven't left.”
- Do you need a desperate breakthrough? "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)
- The Short Prayer: “Lord, I am at the end of my rope. Be my refuge today because I cannot be my own strength.”
Speak His Character
When you face loss, stop trying to explain the problem to God and start declaring His nature back to Him. Sometimes our most powerful prayers are simply an act of worship to the Lord. Speak it aloud so you can hear your own voice:
"You are good. You are good. You are good."
This reminds your soul that "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion" (Philippians 1:6). Your situation may not be good, but He is good. Reliable. Steadfast. God doesn’t tease us or hide; He does not punish us with distance. He doesn’t ghost us or manipulate us. Even when a mountain of struggle is all you can see, the One who holds the world in His hands is in your corner, and He is worthy to be trusted.
When You Can Only Groan
Scripture speaks of prayers that are simply groans. Romans 8:26 tells us that when we don't know what to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us with "wordless groans." There are times when God deciphers the cries of our hearts without us even saying a word. Even when we can’t articulate our own needs, He can. But it requires the intentional act of turning to Him in the "hard" versus turning to the coping strategies we have used in the past.
The Beauty of the "End of Your Rope"
If you feel you have hit the end of your rope, you are actually in a good place. This is where the Divine steps in. We aren't "strong" in our own power; Scripture tells us His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).
We are not self-sufficient creatures; we were knit to be dependent on Him. And it doesn’t take long-winded efforts to get His attention. If you feel like you have nothing to offer, remember: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." (Psalm 51:17)
A simple, “Lord, I am scared,” resounds in the kingdom of heaven. A quiet whisper, “Lord, I am sad,” reaches His throne. Identifying where you are and your need for help is what brings supernatural, sustaining grace in seasons of silence.
Speak It Until You Feel It
You don’t even have to "feel" it yet. Continue speaking Truth over your situation and, before you know it, your emotions will catch up. But remember: You cannot recount Scripture you haven’t read. Real relationship with the Lord happens when prayer becomes an overflow of who you are, not just something you do. If you don't know what to pray today, speak the Word. Remind yourself of His reputation.
As Isaiah 43 (The Message) reminds us:
"When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down. When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end. Because I am God, your personal God, The Holy of Israel, your Savior."
He has never failed, and He won't start now. That thing that is weighing you down, bring it to Him today with borrowed words.
