The Covered Home: 7 Short Prayers To Pray Over Your Family
Have you ever considered the incredible influence you have as you walk through the rooms of your home?
It is easy to feel like you’re failing spiritually when your day doesn't allow for a quiet hour of devotion. But we often forget that some of the most powerful spiritual work you will ever do happens in the in-between moments—in the car on the way to school, standing over the kitchen sink, or walking past your children’s doors at night.
Your "right-now" prayer is more powerful than your "someday" prayer. God isn't waiting for you to be perfect or for the house to be quiet; He is waiting to meet you in the middle of the chaos. As a leader of your home, your words carry weight. When you pray over your family, you aren't just wishing for the best; you are shifting the atmosphere and inviting the Creator of the universe to stand guard over the people you love most.
You can invite His presence into your kitchen, your car, or your hallway right now with these seven simple prayers.
1. Protection: The Guarded Camp "Lord, we claim Psalm 91 over our home. Be our refuge and our fortress. Guard our 'camp' from sickness, harm, and the schemes of the enemy. We rest knowing You never slumber and You are our constant shield."
- The Word: “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.” (Psalm 91:4)
2. Health: Alignment & Strength "Father, we align our bodies with Your original design. Give us discernment for what we consume and supernatural strength for the days we feel weak. Especially in the weary moments of caregiving, hold up our arms and renew our vitality."
- The Word: “I will restore health to you and heal you of your wounds,” says the Lord. (Jeremiah 30:17)
3. Growth: The Developing Soul "Lord, we pray for the proper growth of our children—physically, mentally, and spiritually. May they grow in stature and in favor with You and man. Root them deeply in Your love so they are unshakable as they mature."
- The Word: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18)
4. Education: A Spirit to Learn "God, give us hearts that are humble, teachable, and reflective of Your nature. Grant our children a hunger for truth and a spirit that loves to learn. Reveal Your wisdom to them while they are young, and give us the patience to be their first and best teachers."
- The Word: “Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.” (Proverbs 9:9)
5. Relationships: The Basin & Towel "Lord, bring the right people in and move the wrong people out. Give us the heart of Jesus at the washbasin—never too busy or too 'important' to serve. Help us live with open hands, knowing we are blessed specifically to be a blessing."
- The Word: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34)
6. Presence: Peace & Provision "Prince of Peace, let Your presence be the atmosphere of our home. Be the balm for our loneliness and the relief for our anxiety. We trust You to fill every gap we leave and to provide for every need according to Your riches."
- The Word: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)
7. Lighthouse: A City on a Hill "Lord, make our family a lighthouse. May Your light shine through our unity and our service so clearly that our community is drawn to You. Let us be a city on a hill that cannot be hidden, reflecting Your glory to a dark world."
- The Word: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
Grace in Every Moment
Prayer isn’t about finding a perfect window of time; it’s about finding God in the windows you already have. There is a unique authority in a parent’s prayer. Don't wait for a "perfect" hour of silence to use it.
As we explore in Pastor Franklin’s new book, The Power of Short Prayers, even a few words spoken in faith can shift the atmosphere of an entire household. For every area where you feel you’ve missed the mark or lacked the strength, let His grace fill the gap. You don't have to do this in your own fortitude. He is already there, waiting to meet you right in the middle of it all.
