Making the Most of Our Longest Day

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." (Psalm 23:4)

On the summer solstice, the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. It is the longest day of the year, a moment when the world is drenched in peak light. Yet, there is a strange scientific truth about this day. Because the sun sits at such a high, intense angle, it actually creates the most dramatic, elongated shadows you will see all year. If you stand out at noon, your shadow stretches out long and thin across the pavement. It is a paradox of physics. The brighter the light becomes, the more distinct and stretched the shadow appears.

We often experience our own seasons of "long days" that feel nothing like a celebration. You know the ones. They are the days filled with crushing anxiety, heavy grief, or the kind of fear that keeps you staring at the ceiling long after the house has gone quiet. When you are walking through the valley of the shadow of death, it feels as though the darkness is swallowing you whole. You feel trapped in an unending stretch of gloom, and you wonder why your life has become so difficult, so wearying, and so dark.

But there is a spiritual reality here that changes everything. A shadow is not a sign that the light has gone out. In fact, a shadow cannot exist without a light source. The very fact that there is a shadow cast over your life is proof that the Light of the World is standing right there beside you. You would not even see the shadow if the Presence of God was not radiating nearby, illuminating your path even when you feel like you are stumbling in the dark.

Sometimes, these difficult seasons feel like a "Ziklag" moment, that in-between place where you are stuck between a prophecy you received and the destiny you are waiting to see. It is a place of testing that everyone will go through at some point. As you navigate these long days, remember this: what you do in your Ziklag matters. Will you stand or crumble? If you are feeling overwhelmed by the shadows of your current season, I encourage you to watch this message on How to Recover It All to help you find your footing again.

We must learn to stop fearing the appearance of our trials. Charles Spurgeon once offered a powerful perspective on this reality when he wrote, "The shadow of a dog cannot bite, and the shadow of a sword cannot kill." When we walk with the Shepherd, the things that seem most terrifying to us are merely shadows. They have no real power over our souls because they are nothing more than an obstruction of the Light. The shadow might look intimidating and long, but it is fundamentally powerless.

When you are in the middle of a hard season, you do not have to fight the shadow. You simply need to turn your face toward the Light that is casting it. This is the secret to enduring your longest days. You stop obsessing over the darkness of your circumstances and you begin to intentionally seek the face of the Lord. You look for the One who is standing right there with you, holding His rod and His staff.

Practically speaking, this means your "long day" is actually a divine invitation. Instead of using your energy to worry about how the day will end, you can use those extra hours of trial to practice presence. When the anxiety spikes, take that as a signal to stop and acknowledge the Light. Remind yourself that the shadow is not the reality. The Shepherd is the reality. The Light is the reality. Your trial is passing, but the One who walks with you is eternal.

You can turn a terrifying day into a sanctuary of prayer. You do not need to have the perfect words or a profound theological epiphany. You just need to show up and stay near the Source. When the shadow feels long, realize that your Shepherd is standing close enough to cast it. That closeness is your comfort, and that light is your guarantee that you are never walking alone.
