Forgiveness releases the power of God.

I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love. Luke 7:47 NLT

While we know that Jesus taught on the power and importance of prayer many times, the Bible only records a few of the actual prayers He prayed while here on earth. In that brief list of precious prayers, two of the most memorable are The Lord’s Prayer and the powerful prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. But it is the prayer he prayed last, while hanging on that cross at Calvary, I find to be the most powerful prayer of all. It was a prayer of agonizing pain and transparency, asking His Father in heaven why He had forsaken Him . . . and then came the most powerful words ever uttered by our Savior. He looked at his executioners, all those who had cried out, “Crucify him! Crucify Him!” He looked those who had gathered just to see the spectacle of it all. He looked out at all of them, and then uttered these simple but profound words,

Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing. Luke 23:34

These words are just as powerful today, because they remind you that no matter what you are going through, no matter what kind of news you have received and no matter what you have done or situation you are in . . . nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can separate you from the love of God.  But I would be remiss if I did not also show you where Jesus gives this simple warning when He said:

"But if you do not forgive others their sins, your father will not forgive YOUR sins." Matthew 6:15 NIV

Forgiveness is not just an option or a choice. It is something the Lord insists we do, and no one knows how hard this can be like Jesus. But there is good news! You need to know that devils are bound in the presence of forgiveness. The very act of forgiveness affects hell. The act of forgiveness affects heaven, and the act of forgiveness affects earth. When people forgive each other, the power of God is released. Individuals, families, and churches experience revival in the presence of forgiveness. Demon powers are neutralized and the devil has to back up and back off in the atmosphere of forgiveness!

Hurt is a reality of life, but bitterness is a choice and a reaction. Forgiveness takes a powerful weapon right out of Satan’s hand. Maybe there is a situation you have experienced at the hands of another, and many times it is from someone very close to you. Or perhaps it’s yourself you blame. Sometimes forgiving ourselves can be the hardest of all. Yet God says as far as the east is from the west, He has removed our transgressions from us. He, “remembers your sins no more” (Isaiah 43:25). Isn’t it time you let go, too?

Forgiveness is a choice, but it’s a choice you can’t afford not to take. There is freedom in forgiveness and there is power in choosing to extend forgiveness out of obedience and surrender to the Lord. That is what I want for you today my friend. And chances are, as you have been reading this, a face has come to mind. Don’t miss this chance to open the windows of God’s blessing and forgive today while it is fresh.

At a time in our nation when anger and rage are erupting uncontrollably, and senseless tragedies are dominating our headlines, we need to know there is a better way. Until our nation forgives, it will not begin to heal. Forgiveness is not about what the other person deserves—it’s what YOU deserve. YOU deserve forgiveness. YOU deserve to move on. You deserve the freedom that only comes from letting go, and trusting God with your future.

With your gift of ANY AMOUNT this month, you can request your own copy of Craig Stone’s book Forgiving the Unforgivable. His story is a powerful account of how hope and healing can arise out of pain, loss and betrayal. I believe his story will inspire you to let go, and let God begin to heal the past.
