When Life Doesn't Make Sense, Can You Still Trust God?

Imagine sitting down to complete a puzzle. You begin with the pieces spread across the table, but one catches your attention. It is dark, oddly shaped, and doesn't seem to belong anywhere. You turn it around, try it in a few places, and finally set it aside. Nothing about it makes sense.

But the problem isn't necessarily the piece. You simply haven't seen the whole picture yet.

We see what is happening today, but we cannot see how every part of our story connects. We know the disappointment, the unanswered prayer, and the uncertainty of what comes next. We cannot see what lies around the corner or how the circumstances we are facing might fit into a much larger story.

God can.

One phone call changes everything. A relationship ends. A door you prayed would open closes instead. You find yourself in a place you never expected to be, wondering how something so painful could fit into the life you thought God was leading you toward.

In moments like these, it is natural to ask questions. Where is God in all of this? Does He see what I am going through? If He is all-powerful and knows everything, why hasn't He changed my circumstances?

These are not questions we need to be ashamed of asking. They are questions people have wrestled with for generations. And while we may not always receive the answers we want, we can find confidence in understanding who God is.

God is sovereign. He is King over all creation. Nothing exceeds His knowledge or His power, and nothing catches Him by surprise. He sees the beginning and the end, including every detail that remains hidden from us.

Psalm 139:16 reminds us that our days are known to God. He is not limited to the moment we are living in.

What leaves us confused does not leave Him without understanding.

God has not surrendered His authority, abandoned His people, or lost the ability to bring redemption out of what is broken.

When the Pieces Don't Seem to Fit

Joseph knew what it meant to live through a season that made no sense.

His brothers betrayed him, threw him into a pit, and sold him into slavery. He was taken far from home, separated from his family, and forced to build a life in a place he never wanted to be. Later, after doing what was right, he was falsely accused and imprisoned.

Imagine the questions Joseph must have faced. Where was the promise God had given him? How could his life have taken such a painful turn? Had God forgotten him?

Yet Joseph's story did not end in the pit or the prison. In time, he was brought before Pharaoh and given authority in Egypt. God used his position to prepare for a devastating famine and preserve countless lives, including the very family that had betrayed him.

Looking back, Joseph told his brothers in Genesis 50:20, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good” (NIV).

Joseph did not call their actions good. Their betrayal was real, and the suffering he endured was real. But their wrongdoing did not have the final word over his life. God was able to bring good out of what others had intended for evil.

We may not see our own story unfold as Joseph's did. We may never receive a complete explanation for certain losses or disappointments. But his story reminds us that what happens to us does not have to define the ending. God can work in circumstances we would never have chosen, and He can accomplish things beyond what we can see in the moment.

You do not have to pretend that it doesn't hurt. Trusting God does not mean denying your sadness or refusing to ask difficult questions.

Bring Him your questions. Tell Him your fears. Faith is not having an explanation for everything. It is continuing to turn toward God when the explanations are missing.

Romans 8:28 offers this promise: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (NIV).

When you cannot see how the pieces fit, you can still trust the One who sees the whole picture.

You may not understand the piece you are holding today. But you can trust the God who holds the full picture.

If you are wrestling with questions about God's care, His sovereignty, or why He allows us to walk through difficult seasons, take time to hear the message, “Does God Really Care?”. It offers biblical encouragement for trusting God when life doesn't make sense and reminds us to look beyond our circumstances to the character of the One who holds us through them.
