Eating the Dust: The Counter-Cultural Path to True Influence
We live in a world that has a mechanized influence. We measure success by the "follow," a lazy, costless click of a button that requires no sacrifice and offers no true allegiance. We have traded the weight of character for the volume of a crowd, convinced that if enough strangers "like" our public image, we have achieved something of value.
But the Christian walk offers a different metric. True influence isn't about how many people are watching you from a distance. It is about who is walking close enough to be changed by you.
The Dust of the Rabbi
In the ancient Jewish world, when a Rabbi accepted a young student, there was a common blessing spoken over him: "May you be covered in the dust of your Rabbi." This was not a metaphor for social media engagement. It was a literal picture of proximity. To be a disciple meant following so closely behind your teacher on the narrow, dirt roads of Israel that as his sandals hit the ground, the dust he kicked up would settle on your clothes, your skin, and your hair. To have influence over someone meant they were close enough to eat your dust.
True influence costs something. It requires a life lived in such a way that those closest to you, your spouse, your children, your neighbors, want to walk in your footsteps. What good is it if a million strangers like your photo, but those who see your behind-the-scenes life have no respect for your on-stage persona?
Jesus: Influence Without an Empire
Jesus is the ultimate disruption of modern influence. In a world obsessed with money, fame, and Roman power, He chose the opposite. He did not garner influence by building a platform. He garnered it by building a towel-and-basin lifestyle.
Modern influence says, "Look at me." Jesus says, "Follow me."
One is about ego; the other is about invitation. Jesus’ influence did not come from a marketing budget. It came from the authority of a life surrendered to the Father. He showed us that the best way to garner true, lasting influence is to pick up a cross. Reaching the world starts with the willingness to die to yourself.
Can God Trust You with a Crowd?
We often ask God to expand our borders before we have mastered our backyard. We want the public influence without the private discipline. But behind the scenes of your life is the foundation for the public influence God can use.
If God cannot trust you with the heart of the person sitting across the dinner table from you, why would He trust you with the hearts of a thousand people in a digital audience? True influence is born in the secret place. It is forged in the moments when no one is watching, when you choose integrity over image and service over status.
Defining the Difference
Influence is NOT a follower count, a blue checkmark, or a bank account. Influence IS the spiritual weight you carry that makes others want to know the God you serve. God is looking for leaders who are not afraid to get their feet dirty and whose lives kick up enough dust of the Fruit of the Spirit that those behind them are covered in it.
