Feed Your Spirit

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

Fasting and prayer can help you sever addictions to tobacco, to drugs, to alcohol, to pornography. Fasting and prayer help you cut out the double life, the secret sins that you believe are hidden from everyone else—but they are not hidden to God. Sin will clog the pipeline of all future blessings. Fasting is the spiritual “Drano” that unclogs the flow of the living water in our soul.

Fasting makes you sensitive to the “trash” that tries to invade your life. We don’t have any movie channels on our TV because so much of it is just filth. But I was flipping through channels one evening and was shocked to find about five movie channels available. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing in my home! We called the cable company to find out what was going on. I wasn’t paying for that and did not want my children stumbling across it either. The cable company explained that it was a free 60-day trial! In other words, they pipe that stuff in unsolicited to get people hooked. Needless to say we had it taken off immediately.

You may think that is insignificant, but remember, the enemy is prowling. He is sneaking around. You hear a twig snap behind you and convince yourself that it is no big deal…but he is about to pounce. I remember the old folks saying, “The devil is in the details.” What you feed your mind on matters. The kind of music you feed your soul on matters. Fasting doesn’t just pertain to what you put in your stomach, but what you feed your soul and spirit as well.

When we begin a 21-day fast at the first of the year, one of the things we always focus on is getting the trash out of the temple. The Bible says “…do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Cor. 6:19-20).

Cry out to God, fast and pray. Invite God to begin a demolition in your life. He’s going to tear down who you used to be as He raises you up to become who you were meant to be, who you were born to be! God had something in mind when He put you on this earth. And I want to challenge you to whatever degree you can to make fasting part of your life.
