When You Don't Know What's Next

The Sacred Beauty of the Unknown

Imagine standing at the edge of a trailhead just before dawn. You know the path is there, and you can see the first few feet of dirt and rock in front of you, but a thick, heavy fog swallows everything beyond that. You aren’t necessarily jumping into the deep; you are asked to walk. Every step requires a quiet, steady trust that the ground will be there to meet your foot, even though the destination is completely hidden from view.

That is the distinct tension of a transition season. Whether you are a graduate walking across a stage, a parent watching a child leave the nest, or a professional stepping away from a long-term career, transition feels remarkably like walking through that morning mist. It is the uncomfortable, holy space between what was and what will be. We often find ourselves searching for definitive lines in the sand or a map that shows every turn ahead, but we must ask ourselves a difficult question: if we had the map, would we truly need faith?

The life of faith is rarely a paved road with clear signage. Instead, it is an invitation to move before the haze lifts. We see this in the very beginning with Abraham.

“By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” (Hebrews 11:8)

Abraham didn’t have a five-year plan or a guaranteed outcome. He had a call and a promise. Like him, we are often asked to step out into the fog so that God can meet us with direction along the way. If we wait for clarity before we move, we might miss the miracle of the journey.

Faithfulness Where Your Feet Are

When the comfort of the nest is gone, and the fog rolls in, our instinct is to scramble for control. We want to see through the vapor to the end of the story. We look at the life of Joseph and see a man who understood the power of leaning in when his entire horizon was obscured. Joseph began his story as the favored son, living a life of relative ease. Then came the devastating blows: betrayal by his own brothers, the sting of being sold into slavery, and the injustice of being lied about and imprisoned.

In every season of transition, Joseph could have been paralyzed by the thick uncertainty of his circumstances. Instead, he chose to be faithful exactly where his feet were. He did the right thing in the pit, in the house of Potiphar, and in the prison cell. He didn’t wait for the sun to break through the clouds before he started living with integrity. He leaned into the Lord in the dark, trusting that even when he couldn't see the path, the Lord was faithfully guiding his steps toward the palace.

“The Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in everything he did.” (Genesis 39:3)

Joseph’s life teaches us that the next right thing is a holy act. When you can only see a few inches in front of you, you are simply called to be present and faithful to the task right in front of your face.

The Constant in the Chaos

Transition is inherently loud, and the fog can feel isolating. It brings the noise of new expectations, the grief of what we left behind, and the anxiety of the unknown. Yet, when the atmosphere around us shifts and blurs, we can take profound comfort in the fact that the Savior of our hearts never does.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

He is the anchor in the transition. He is the one who holds us steady when the landscape feels unrecognizable. In these seasons where you feel pushed out of the comfortable and into the mist, remember that you aren't being pushed away from God, but pushed deeper into His arms.

Putting One Foot in Front of the Other

If you find yourself in a season of transition today, do not be discouraged by the lack of a finished map. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is simply put one foot in front of the other. Trust that the same God who led Abraham and sustained Joseph is walking beside you through the mist.

He is not just at the destination waiting for the fog to clear; He is in the transition with you. As you navigate this shift, I want to encourage you with a powerful resource titled It's Time to Move. It reminds us that when God moves, He often moves suddenly. There isn't always time to prepare in the moment, which is why we must live in a state of constant readiness.

Whether you are in a season of waiting or a period of stagnation, stay expectant. God is always able to change your life in an instant, and our job is simply to be ready when He says it's time to take that next step into the unknown. Be faithful today. Do the next right thing today. Trust that His presence is enough for this step, and the next one will be revealed as the mist begins to part.

What is the next right thing currently sitting in front of you that requires the most trust?
