The Myth of Next Year

We live as if we have a contract with time. We treat "tomorrow" like a guaranteed deposit in a bank account that will never go bankrupt. We tell ourselves we’ll prioritize our character when life settles down, we’ll dive into that Bible study when work slows down, and we’ll finally focus on our spiritual growth when our "emotions align with our intentions."

But here is the cold, hard truth: Spiritual maturity does not happen by accident, and your feelings are a terrible compass for your consistency. If we aren't walking in integrity today, "next year" won't magically grant it to us.

The Man Who Knew His End

In 2007, a professor named Randy Pausch stood before a crowded room to give what is now famously known as "The Last Lecture." He had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and knew he had only months to live.

He spoke with a startling clarity because his mortality was no longer an abstract concept; it was a deadline. When you know your time is short, you lose the appetite for excuses. He didn't have the luxury of "next year" to become the man he wanted to be. He understood that the only time we have to grow, to repent, and to lead is the potency of today.

The 86,400 Reality

Imagine a bank that credits your account every morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance; every evening, it deletes whatever you failed to use. We all have that bank. It’s called seconds.

Every day, you are given 86,400 seconds to invest in your spiritual life. There are no do-overs. When we procrastinate on our spiritual growth, we aren't just delaying; we are squandering a currency we can never earn back. Integrity is simply the stewardship of these seconds. As James 4:14 warns, our life is but a "mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." We cannot afford to spend that mist on a "someday" version of ourselves.

The Unhurried King

If we want to see the ultimate example of spiritual consistency, we look to Jesus. He lived every second in the shadow of the cross, yet He was never frantic. His integrity wasn't a performance for the crowds; it was the result of a life lived in constant, unhurried communion with the Father.

Even with the weight of the world on His shoulders, Jesus was never "too busy" to be holy. He didn't wait for a "better time" to pray or to serve. He understood that the "now" was exactly where the Father was working. He didn't treat His character as a future goal; He expressed it in every dusty mile and every intentional conversation.

The High Cost of Delay

Procrastination in our spiritual life is the thief of impact. When we delay our obedience, we aren't just stalling our own growth; we are withholding the impact intended for the people standing on the other side of our "yes."

Your growth is never just about you. There are people you are meant to encourage and communities you are meant to serve who are looking for the light of a consistent life. When we step into our calling today, we aren’t just moving ourselves forward; we are clearing the path for those around us. Consistency isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being present enough to take the next step God has put in front of you.

Today is the Day

With the return of Christ imminent, the luxury of "later" has evaporated. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 6:2, “Now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” That sense of urgency shouldn't spark fear; it should spark fire.

  1. Today is the day to align your daily rhythm with your eternal purpose.

  1. Today is the day to prioritize the private habits that build consistent character.

  1. Today is the day to offer God your "yes," even if you don't feel "ready."

Walking the Bridge

If you feel the stir to grow but aren't sure where to plant your first step, we’ve created a tool to help you navigate this transition. Your integrity is a bridge, and the devotional, Restart Your Heart, is designed to help you take those first few steps across it.

It isn't about reaching a distant finish line or checking off a religious to-do list. It is a tactical guide for cultivating the same "intentional presence" and consistent character we see in the life of Jesus. If you are ready to stop waiting for your emotions to align and start leaning into the 86,400 seconds of spiritual potential you have today, we’d love to walk that path with you.
