Sermon Recap: The Call to Stand for What's Right
Water always flows in the direction of least resistance. It naturally carves out the path of least effort, winding around obstacles, coasting downhill, and settling in whatever low place it happens to land.
It takes zero energy to go with the flow. But if we allow the desire for acceptance, approval, and social comfort to dictate our trajectory, we will drift into places we never intended to go. We will end up at the point of least resistance rather than the place of God's calling.
As Christians, we cannot afford to be passive with our faith. True faith is not a quiet opinion we hold in private; it is an active, daily walk that demands bold alignment with the truth of God.
The Myth of Neutrality
We live in a culture that values keeping the peace above all else. But true biblical peace is never built on compromise.
The Bible makes it clear that standing for truth creates a dividing line. Jesus Himself stated directly in the Gospels that He came not to bring a surface-level earthly peace, but division (Luke 12:51). Aligning with Christ means stepping out of the comfortable middle ground.
When we look at the message to the church in Revelation 3, God makes His stance on passivity explicit: to be lukewarm is deplorable to Him. A lukewarm faith tries to keep one foot in the kingdom and one foot in the culture, seeking to avoid conflict while holding onto religious identity. But in the eyes of God, there is no middle territory.
If we are not actively standing for Him, we are standing against Him.
Lessons from Deborah: A Call for Courage
When those who should lead fall silent, God calls on the courageous to step up.
In the Old Testament, when fear immobilized others, Deborah stood up to lead and fight in a space where others refused to act. She chose obedience over ease, standing for righteousness when standard cultural expectations or passivity would have been far simpler.
Her example reminds us that righteousness requires bravery. Taking a stand may mean facing disapproval, opposition, or being disliked by the world around us. But our ultimate accountability belongs to God, not to public opinion. We must learn to fear God above the fleeting approval of men.
No Neutral Christians
This truth becomes especially urgent as we navigate crucial decision-making seasons, including election weeks.
In every area of life, from our personal choices to our public civic duties, there are no neutral Christians. Choosing to remain passive, choosing to stay silent, or choosing not to participate is still a choice. To refuse to act is simply yielding your influence to the prevailing culture. In effect, choosing not to vote is simply handing your vote over to whatever force pushes the hardest.
God requires His people to be strong, brave, and courageous for the things of the Lord.
Stepping Out of the Current
Living out an active, uncompromising faith means swimming upstream. It means recognizing that the path of least resistance will never lead to the promises of God.
As you go through this week, ask yourself:
- Where in my life have I allowed the desire for approval to keep me quiet?
- Am I living hot, cold, or comfortably lukewarm?
- How can I practically demonstrate holy courage in my decisions, my voice, and my actions today?
Let us choose this day whom we will serve, standing firm on the Word of God with courage, conviction, and unwavering faith.
