Faith Over Panic: Finding Direction When Life Doesn't Make Sense
When crisis hits, or a hard decision looms, our default setting is panic, self-reliance, or despair. We spin our wheels or let frustration spill onto others.
We see this raw human reaction in 1 Samuel 30. When David and his men found Ziklag burned and their families captured, his men talked about stoning him. But David chose a different way. Instead of reacting out of fear, he encouraged himself in the Lord and asked for direction: "Should I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?"
Bringing God Into the Everyday Details
That moment highlights a trap we fall into weekly: failing to involve God in our decisions.
We reserve God for major crises while handling the daily grind on our own. We hesitate to bring "trivial" choices to Him, worrying it is bothersome to ask about:
- Which vehicle to buy
- Where to plan a family getaway
- Schooling adjustments for our kids
Bringing these details to God is the most grounding thing we can do. He is intimately acquainted with our daily routines, logistical puzzles, and schedules, and He is faithful to guide us.
The Trap of the Storm-Tossed Boat
In confusing seasons, we develop selective amnesia.
Think of the disciples in the boat with Jesus, terrified by the waves. Right in front of them were baskets full of His faithfulness; the leftover miracle bread from the feeding of the multitudes. They had tangible proof of His provision, but the storm blinded them.
We do the same thing. When surrounded by life's waves, whether a financial hurdle, career pivot, or family transition, we forget the consistency of the Lord’s character.
Cultivating God Tunnel Vision
This is where we need God tunnel vision.
Instead of letting circumstances dictate our peace, God tunnel vision forces our eyes upward. It is the intentional practice of looking past the chaos and fixing our gaze entirely on how mighty, powerful, and faithful He is. It is standing firm on the truth that He will never leave us, no matter what our circumstances scream.
The Freedom of Short, Scriptural Prayers
God has given us an anchor. When our minds race and we lack words, we can pray scriptures over ourselves.
These do not need to be long prayers. They are simple whispers in the kitchen, car, or middle of the night that act as spiritual reset buttons. Bringing every detail to His feet and praying His Word shifts the weight off our shoulders and places it firmly onto His. That is the freest place we can live.
