May is the New January: Why Now is the Best Time to Restart
There is a specific kind of quiet that settles in by mid-February. It is the sound of thousands of gym memberships going unused, half-read books sitting on nightstands, and Bible reading plans paused indefinitely at the end of Leviticus. We often enter the year with a "sprint" mentality, fueled by the cold air and the pressure of a fresh calendar. But by the time May arrives, that initial adrenaline has long since faded.
If you feel like the goals you set in the winter have withered, you aren't failing; you are simply human. Statistics tell us that most people have abandoned their primary resolutions within the first 60 days of the year. We often spend the months of March and April carrying the invisible weight of those "unfinished" versions of ourselves. We tell ourselves that we will just wait until next year to try again, essentially writing off six months of potential growth.
The Spring Reset
But what if we looked at the window of May through a different lens? While January is about "willpower," May is about "renewal." In nature, this is the season where everything dormant begins to reach for the light. It is a natural time for a spiritual awakening.
As the school year closes and the pace of life shifts toward the intentionality of summer, we have a unique opportunity to restart. We don't have to wait for a cold morning in January to decide that our spiritual health matters. We can decide today.
Science supports the idea that our environment plays a massive role in our habits. It is often cited that while it takes about 21 days to form a simple behavior, it takes an average of 66 days for a complex lifestyle change to truly take root. Furthermore, breaking the "habit of quitting" requires a conscious 60-day commitment to a new path. May provides the perfect runway. By starting now, you are building a foundation that will carry you through the summer and into the fall with a sense of purpose rather than regret.
A Heart Recalibrated
The second half of your year does not have to be a repeat of the first. You have the permission to pivot. We serve a Creator who is the Master of the "New Beginning." We see this promise in Isaiah 43:19:
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
The "new thing" God wants to do in your life doesn't require a specific date on a calendar; it only requires a willing heart. It is about moving away from the "performance" of New Year’s resolutions and toward a sustainable rhythm of grace.
A Resource for the Journey
To help you navigate this mid-year awakening, we have developed a resource titled "Restart Your Heart." This isn't just another book to add to a shelf. It is a tactical, soul-deep devotional designed to help you bridge the gap between your current reality and your spiritual potential. It focuses on creating patterns that last, helping you break the cycle of starting and stopping.
When you choose to pick up this devotional, you are also choosing to partner with us in our mission to serve our community and share this hope with others. Every copy represents a step toward a better cause and a more focused life.
With May just around the corner, the second half of your year is waiting to be written. Let’s stop looking back at the January that was, and start looking at the May that is. Today is the perfect day to restart your heart.
