Marks of Distinction

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1 NKJV)

When you look at history, you see moments where ordinary families did something extraordinary by choosing to protect what mattered most. In Amsterdam during World War II, Corrie Ten Boom’s family turned their home into a place of refuge. They reinforced the walls, creating hidden spaces where Jewish children could be protected from danger. When soldiers searched house after house, many were discovered, but some were hidden so well that they remained safe. Those walls became a covering that saved lives. That is what made that family heroes. They created a place of hiding and safety when destruction was all around them.

One of the children who was protected there, Anne Frank, later wrote about her life in hiding. Even in the midst of fear and confinement, she remembered the family that gave her shelter. She understood that being hidden in that place meant life instead of death. That story paints a powerful picture of what you are called to do spiritually. You are not just raising children, you are building a covering over them. You are creating a place where they can be hidden in the presence of God. Every time you bring your family into worship, every time you pray over them, every time you set an example of faith, you are building walls of protection around their lives.

There is another picture from nature that says the same thing, especially seen in animals like the impala, a type of African antelope often found on safari. The impala is known for its speed and its ability to survive in dangerous environments filled with predators like lions. What makes it fascinating is how the young learn to survive. The fawns stay extremely close to their mothers, especially in tall grass where visibility is low. In dangerous moments, survival depends on recognition. The young impala watch for their mother’s marks of distinction and look for her subtle signals, especially ear movement and body posture. A slight change in her position in the bush can signal danger is near. Those quiet signals become life-saving warnings that help the next generation escape predators they cannot yet see.

In the same way, your life should carry marks of distinction. Your children should see something on your life that points them toward God. Not perfection, but consistency. Not performance, but presence. A life that has been with Jesus leaves evidence behind. That is what makes you a family hero. Not perfection, but visibility of faith. A life that says, “Follow me as I follow Christ.” A life that shows your children where safety is found and how to recognize danger before it comes too close.

You may not always feel strong, and you may not always feel like you are doing enough, but heaven sees every moment you choose to lead your family toward Him. Every prayer, every act of faith, every decision to stay rooted in God becomes part of the covering over your home. You are building more than a routine. You are building refuge. You are building a place where your family can be hidden under the shadow of the Almighty.

Prayer: Father, help me to build a life that shelters my family in Your presence. Let my walk with You leave clear marks of faith that guide those who follow me. Teach me to lead with consistency, love, and truth. May my home be a place where my family is hidden in You and safe in Your shadow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
