Family Heroes
Family is important to God.
That’s probably not news to you. But have you stopped to think about just how important it is? The two most important things you can accomplish in your life are trusting Jesus as your Savior, and guiding your family to do the same. It’s not enough to secure your own eternity; God wants to save your entire family!
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” Acts 16:31
The book of Hebrews lists heroes of the faith, the miracle workers, the giant slayers, and the rainmakers. Then, right there among those astonishing stories, God sees fit to include three individuals whose major accomplishment is this one thing: they saved their family.
“Give me a sure sign that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.” Joshua 2:12-13
That was the oath Rahab the prostitute asked for in return for hiding the spies in Jericho. As long as she could get her family into the house, the spies agreed to save them from destruction. The house represents church. In Hebrews 11:31 when Rahab is listed among the heroes of faith, it’s for this one reason—she stepped out in faith and saved her family. She fought to protect them. She risked being ridiculed and rejected to do whatever she could to get her family in the house before those spied returned to Jericho, because she knew safety was in the house. Their only way to salvation was to get in that house!
It’s the same for us today with God’s house … with church. If we want our family to witness miracles, we’ve got to get them in church. If we want our brothers and sisters to find freedom and healing, we’ve got to get them in church. If we want our children to be protected, we’ve got to get them in church.
Matthew 16:18 says “… I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” God’s not just interested in individuals coming into His church—he wants whole families. The most important thing we can do in life, is have faith that affects our families. That is greatness in God’s eyes. That’s equal to hero status in His book.
God thinks if you’re getting your family saved, then you’re doing something just as great as Samson, Gideon, David, and Abraham. If you are teaching your family to know who Jesus is, God says, “You’re a hero in My eyes.”
James tells us in chapter 2, verse 25 that even Rahab the prostitute was considered righteous for what she did. Understand the grace of Christ is stronger than any addiction. His mercy is more powerful than any sin. It’s never too late to be an example to your family. It doesn’t matter if your family says, “wait a minute YOU want us to go to church?” It’s never too late to be a family hero. Decide now. Decide today. Your children are worth the fight. Your marriage, your parents, your estranged brother and distant sister ... they are worth it.
It’s not about what you’ve done or what you haven’t done; it’s about this one thing you DO — get them in The House!
Ephesians 5:26 tells us we are cleaned by the washing with water through the Word. That’s why it’s so important that our families get in the house of the God. They need to hear His Word and allow it to wash over them! When you’ve done your part to get your family in The Word, then The Word gets in them!
