"The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all." Ecclesiastes 9:11
Five hundred years before Christopher Columbus ever set sail across the ocean, a young Viking named Leif Erikson stood on the shores of Greenland and looked out at a horizon where maps simply ended. Beyond that final line of safety lay a vast and terrifying expanse. Raised by a tutor who taught him the ways of the world, Leif grew into a man of wisdom and consideration. When he traveled to Norway and encountered a vibrant faith that changed his life, something deep inside him shifted. He heard ancient sagas of land lying to the west, and instead of staying safely tucked away in what was comfortable and familiar, he gathered a crew, hoisted his sails, and pointed his wooden ship straight into the fog.
Leif did not know the exact day he would spot the white sandy beaches and rich forests of the eastern Canadian coast. He only knew that the wind was blowing. When he arrived, he found a land so bountiful with fish and grapes that he ultimately gave the credit back to God. He took a bold step into the unknown because he recognized that a new season had arrived.
We often find ourselves standing at our own edge of the map. Life feels predictable, safe, and perhaps a little confining. We look at our routines and wonder if this is all there is, feeling trapped like a bird in a cage or a fish in a net of our own making. Yet Scripture reminds us that we serve a God who is constantly setting up divine appointments. There are moments in every life when preparation collides with destiny.
When you put God first in your life, He puts things into alignment. The Holy Spirit is a Creator, not a copycat, and He has unique plans waiting to surface right where you are. Chance in the kingdom of God is never an accident. It is a divine setup. Think of blind Bartimaeus shouting louder against the crowd, or Zacchaeus climbing out on a limb because he felt the urgency of the moment. They refused to let a miraculous window pass them by.
Your life is not governed by random luck. When frustration whispers that you have missed your chance, God whispers that His timing is perfect. Maybe you have been waiting for a door to open in your career, or maybe you have felt a quiet nudge to finally forgive someone and step out of an old offense. The innkeeper in the Christmas story missed the arrival of the Savior because he was simply too busy to notice, but you do not have to miss yours.
Stepping into your calling does not require you to navigate massive, uncharted oceans in a wooden ship. Most of the time, it looks like answering a quiet prompt from the Holy Spirit when it would be much easier to stay silent. It looks like choosing faith over the comfort of staying stuck. You do not have to figure out the entire voyage today. You only need to be willing to untie the rope and raise your sail.
Take a quiet moment right now to look at your current season. Where have you been waiting for permission to step out, and what is one concrete, single step you can take today to move toward the future God has prepared for you?
