Finish Like You Started
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness." 2 Timothy 4:7-8
Paul wrote 2 Timothy from prison.
He was near the end. He knew it. The execution he had been anticipating was close. The ministry he had given everything to for decades was now being carried by people he had trained and loved and occasionally frustrated by. His body had been through beatings, shipwrecks, stonings, and years of hardship that most people would not survive.
And what he wrote in those final pages is not a man winding down. It is a man who fought every round.
I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.
Not I started well. Not I had some great years in the middle. I finished. The same person who was knocked off his horse on the road to Damascus in a blinding encounter with the living God was still seeking that same God, still burning with that same urgency, still anchored to that same faith when they took him to his death.
That is the rarest thing in the kingdom of God. To finish like you started.
Asa started the same way Paul finished. Seeking God before every battle. Dependent, desperate, genuinely relying on the Lord. And somewhere in the middle of a long and successful reign, the seeking quietly stopped. Not because of a dramatic crisis of faith. Because of success. Because of competence. Because he got so good at being king that he forgot he needed God to be king.
He didn't finish like he started. And the Bible records it with a grief that you can feel in the text.
2 Chronicles 16:9 says the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. That verse is the sermon's biography of Asa. He used to be the answer to that verse. He used to be the person God's eyes found when they searched for a loyal heart. And by the end, he wasn't.
The good news is that you are reading this before your end. Wherever you are in the story, the middle is still interruptible. The trajectory is still changeable. The seeking that you may have let grow quiet in the busyness and competence and success of recent years can be restarted today.
Not with a grand gesture. Not with a vow you aren't sure you can keep. Just with the most basic, honest prayer: God, I want to seek You the way I did when I started. I don't want to drift. I don't want to be someone who started well and finished far from where I began. Search me. Find me. Keep me close.
That is the prayer His eyes are running to find.
Finish like you started. The race is not over. And the same God who was with you when you began is still with you now, waiting for you to seek Him.
Reflection
Think back to when your faith felt most alive and most genuine. What were you doing then that you are not doing now? What one practice of seeking God can you reintroduce into your daily rhythm starting today?
Today's Prayer
Lord, I want to say at the end what Paul said at the end. I fought the good fight. I finished the race. I kept the faith. But I can only say that if I keep seeking You today, and tomorrow, and every ordinary day in between. Don't let me drift. Don't let me become someone who relied on what I knew instead of Who I know. I'm seeking You right now. Keep me here. Amen.
