Where Is Your Faith?

“He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’” Mark 4:40

The phone call arrived right in the middle of a mundane afternoon. It was the kind of news that stops time, the kind that makes the walls of a kitchen feel like they are closing in. A dream had just fallen through, or perhaps a difficult diagnosis had arrived in an envelope. In those first few seconds, the heart begins to race, and the mind starts scanning for an escape hatch. The instinct is not usually to kneel. The instinct is to pull out a phone to text a friend, vent on social media, or immediately begin trying to fix the problem through sheer human effort. It is the panic of a ship rocking in a storm, searching for the nearest life raft.

Think back to the last time that news landed on the doorstep of your life. When the wind kicked up and the waves started to crest, where did you run first? It is a question that reveals the true architecture of the soul. Trials act like a searchlight, illuminating the hidden corners where trust is still growing. They are not sent to condemn, but to show exactly where there is room to lean more heavily into the presence of the Father. When the disciples found themselves in a terrifying storm, Jesus asked them directly: “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” He was not belittling their terror. He was pointing them toward the only foundation that holds steady when everything else gives way.

The journey of faith is often described as walking in tandem with the Lord. It is a partnership where His grace meets our obedience. As we navigate the complexities of life, it is vital to remember that faith is not a static object that someone either has or does not have. Romans 12 tells us that the Lord has given everyone a measure of faith. Because He has provided that measure, it means the capacity to ask for more is always available. The cry, “Increase my faith, Lord!” is one of the most powerful prayers a person can offer.

However, growth usually arrives in the heat of the fire. The Lord often chooses to expand our capacity for trust precisely when we decide to remain unashamedly anchored in Him during the hardest parts of our story. They expose whether we are relying on our own strength or if we are truly resting in His.

The “so what” of this truth is found in how a person navigates their daily life. When a struggle arises, it is tempting to believe that the solution must be found in the next conversation, the next purchase, or the next distraction. But true peace begins the moment a person stops running toward the world for comfort and starts running toward the heart of the Father. It is about choosing to pause before reacting. It is about taking a deep breath and whispering a request for help before picking up the phone to vent. That small act of intentionality, choosing the throne room over the group chat, is where the measure of faith begins to grow.

Every hard situation is an invitation to move from a reaction based in fear to a response anchored in the character of God. This does not mean that the pain disappears instantly or that the news becomes easier to hear. It means that the person facing the storm is no longer alone in the boat. The anchor holds, and the heart finds a rhythm of peace that is not dependent on the circumstances.

REFLECTION

The next time that a moment of panic or disappointment arises, force a pause. Before making a single phone call or taking any action, stop and verbalize the situation to the Lord, asking Him to hold your heart steady before you do anything else.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father, thank You for being the anchor that holds when the storms of life begin to rage. Please forgive the moments when the first instinct is to run anywhere but to You. Help me to remember that You are always there, waiting to hold me and to grow my faith in the midst of the trial. I surrender my fear and my need to control the outcome into Your capable hands. Increase my measure of faith today, Lord, and help me to trust You more than I trust my own instincts. Amen.
