When God Seems Asleep
"And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?” Mark 4:38
Water spills over the wooden bow and heavy boots slip against the slick deck as the wind howls a furious song across the Sea of Galilee. The storm hits without warning, turning the familiar lake into a churning abyss of black waves. Professional fishermen who have spent their entire lives navigating these waters grip the sides of the boat with white knuckles. They bail water frantically, but the tide is winning. Every cresting wave threatens to swallow them whole, and the air is thick with the sharp taste of salt and absolute panic.
In the middle of the chaos, right at the stern where the tiller guides the rudder, a figure lies motionless. Jesus is asleep on the cushion.
The disciples stumble backward through the splashing spray, disbelief and terror overriding their better judgment. They crowd around Him, shaking His shoulder, their voices cracking with exhaustion and fear. How can He rest while they are drowning? In their desperation, they look down at the Creator of the wind and the seas and accuse Him of apathy.
“Teacher, do you not care if we drown?” they cry out in Mark 4:38.
It is a remarkably human reaction. We have all stood in that exact boat. Life brings sudden storms that defy our best efforts to stay afloat. A medical report arrives with terrifying words, a marriage hits a season of chilling silence, or a financial valley stretches out so far that the future feels completely invisible. In those moments, heaven can feel remarkably quiet. Prayer feels like bouncing off a ceiling, and the silence of God feels deafening.
During life’s heaviest storms, there are times when it feels like we have a slumbering Savior. The disciples forgot a crucial truth in their panic. The physical presence of Jesus in the boat with them was all the proof they needed to know that He did care. He had not stepped onto the vessel just to abandon them to the deep.
God is shaping you right in the middle of the wind and the waves. His apparent silence is never an absence of His care or His power over your circumstances.
What does this truth mean for your actual life when the alarm goes off, and the weight of your current trial presses down on your chest? It means you do not have to white-knuckle your way through the day. You do not need to manufacture a fake smile or pretend the waves are not high.
Practice radical surrender today by handing over the one specific worry keeping you up at night. Write it down on a piece of paper, say it out loud in your kitchen while the coffee brews, and explicitly tell God that you are releasing the steering wheel into His hands. You do not have to calm the storm to experience His peace.
Reflection
When you look at the storms you are currently facing, where are you tempted to believe that God has fallen asleep to your pain, and how might He be inviting you to rest in His presence right in the middle of the boat today?
Today’s Prayer
Lord, sometimes the winds and the waves in my life feel entirely too big, and honestly, the silence feels heavy. Forgive me for the moments I look around in panic and question if You even care about what I am carrying. Help me to remember that Your presence in my life is my ultimate anchor. Grant me the grace to release my grip on the things I cannot control and trust that You are right here in the boat with me. Amen.
