What To Do In The Time Of Famine

“Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” Galatians 6:9

In Genesis 26, a famine had struck the land. In those days, it was common for people to move elsewhere in search of better resources and opportunities. Yet, in a surprising twist, God gave Isaac an unusual instruction. He told him to stay. Specifically, God said not to go down to Egypt, but to remain in the very place where He had planted him.

In verse 3, God promises, “Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands…” So, despite the famine, Isaac obeyed. He sowed his crops in what seemed like dry, unfruitful soil, and that same year he harvested a hundredfold. God’s hand was on him, and Isaac became so prosperous that even the Philistines grew jealous.

There will be seasons in your life that feel like a personal famine, when everything around you seems barren or fruitless. You may be tempted to throw in the towel and move on. Perhaps your marriage feels strained. Maybe your job has become a source of stress rather than joy. Or perhaps you’re feeling disconnected from the church you once loved. But just like God instructed Isaac, He may be telling you today: “Stay and sow.” Don’t assume that a lack of immediate results means you’re in the wrong place.

Sometimes, the very place that feels hardest to endure is the ground God has chosen to bless you in, if you’ll stay and trust Him.

Even the most faithful people face dry spells. No matter how blessed you are, there will be times of difficulty, discomfort, and discouragement. But these are not signs to flee. They are opportunities to deepen your roots and trust that God is working beneath the surface. We often look for greener pastures, thinking the next thing will be easier or more fulfilling. But God may be calling you to persevere, remain where He’s placed you, and continue sowing seeds of faith, commitment, and hard work. Stay in that marriage. Stay in that business. Stay in that college program. Don’t rush toward escape routes just because they seem more comfortable.

Roll up your sleeves. Sow where God has planted you. And watch as He brings an abundant harvest, even in a land that once felt empty.
