The Priority of the Altar
"Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the Lord God of Israel, that His fierce wrath may turn away from us. My sons, do not be negligent now, for the Lord has chosen you to stand before Him, to serve Him, and that you should minister to Him and burn incense." (2 Chronicles 29:10-11)
There is a specific memory of an old house that was recently renovated. The new owners were excited to modernize the structure. They pulled up the flooring and knocked out walls to make the rooms look larger and more open. They wanted a home that felt efficient, bright, and perfectly in line with the latest design trends. But in their rush to modernize, they accidentally damaged the foundation. They had traded structural integrity for a flashy aesthetic. They wanted the house to look perfect for the cameras, but they had ignored the core components that kept the roof over their heads.
Hezekiah faced a similar choice when he took the throne. His father, Ahaz, had been obsessed with the new and the shiny. Ahaz traveled abroad and saw altars that looked more impressive than the one God commanded Moses to build. He decided the traditional altar was too old-fashioned and outdated. He wanted something that would turn heads, something that looked grand and showy. So, he removed the altar of the Lord and replaced it with a modern, man-made version. The nation’s spiritual foundation was effectively swapped for a trend.
When Hezekiah became king, he looked at that flashy, gorgeous, modern altar and recognized it for what it truly was. It was a beautiful distraction. It looked impressive, but it lacked the power of God. Hezekiah did the hard, unpopular work of tearing down the showy substitute and restoring the original, simple altar of sacrifice. He knew that if the people were going to find their way back to God, they could not rely on convenient, modern shortcuts. They had to return to the place of honest, old-fashioned encounter.
Repentance is often misunderstood as a simple apology. We live in a world that prizes efficiency. We want to outsource our problems and find a quick fix for everything from our grocery shopping to our spiritual struggles. We look for ways to make faith feel streamlined, but true repentance is the opposite of a shortcut. It is a fundamental shift in direction. The original meaning of the word implies a complete turn around. It is the decision to stop walking toward the things that distance you from God and to start moving in a sanctified, holy direction.
This is the reality of your walk with God. It is easy to settle for a faith that is "convenient" and efficient, where you just check a box once a week and continue living exactly as you were before. But God is calling you to something more profound. He is inviting you to look at the "flashy" things you might have built in your life to keep things comfortable or to maintain an image. You might have replaced genuine, heart-level surrender with a routine that looks good on the surface but lacks depth.
To live a life of repentance means you are willing to examine your own foundation. It means you are willing to admit that efficiency has become an idol and that your busy schedule has pushed the altar to the periphery. You do not need a complicated, high-tech method to reconnect with the Lord. You simply need to be honest. You need to identify the areas where you have settled for what is easy rather than what is holy, and you must make the intentional choice to turn your heart back toward Him.
REFLECTION:
Identify one area of your life where you have prioritized convenience over obedience. Perhaps it is how you spend your time, how you handle frustration, or how you interact with your family. Determine to set aside ten minutes today for the express purpose of going to your "altar", a quiet, private space, to tell the Lord that you are ready to turn from that path and move in His direction instead.
TODAY'S PRAYER:
Lord, I confess for the times I have looked for the easiest path instead of the right path. I have let the rush of my life replace the quiet time I need with You at the altar. Please forgive me for settling for substitutes when You desire my whole heart. I turn away from the things that distract me and I choose to set my face toward You. Refresh my spirit and guide my steps as I walk in a new direction today. Amen.
