The Anointing Makes the Difference (Part Three)
“You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached - how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.” Acts 10:37–38 (NIV)
There is a difference between what looks spiritual and what is truly anointed. Hebrews 10:15 reminds us that the Holy Spirit Himself bears witness over the sanctified life. When God sets someone apart, heaven recognizes it, and there is a visible evidence that cannot be faked or manufactured. The anointing is not a performance; it is a witness.
Ecclesiastes 9:8 says, “Let your garments always be white, and let your head lack no oil.” That is a picture of two realities working together, purity and power. White garments speak of a life separated unto God - clean in motive and surrendered in heart. The oil on the head speaks of divine empowerment, the presence of God resting upon a life that belongs fully to Him. Purity is not optional; it is the environment where power grows.
In Scripture, God never treated the anointing lightly. Nadab and Abihu tried to operate in worship without divine instruction, and fire broke out. Saul tried to function in a role he was not anointed for, and the kingdom was taken from him. The message is clear: you cannot substitute effort, emotion, or imitation for what only the Holy Spirit can do. God never asked us to copy power; He calls us to carry His presence.
We live in a generation that is comfortable with substitutes. Brass instead of gold. Appearance instead of presence. Noise instead of glory. But substitutes may shine in the sunlight from a distance, yet they have no weight in the Spirit. Rehoboam replaced stolen gold shields with polished brass so things would look the same outwardly, but heaven knows the difference between real and imitation. I wonder how much of what we have in the church is brass shields, and we’re just trying our best to imitate the real thing, which is the anointing of the Holy Spirit. But there is no imitation that can compare to the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 10 tells us that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil. The pattern has not changed. The anointing still makes people go about doing what human strength could never accomplish. God is still looking for sanctified vessels, people who would rather have His presence than public approval. The anointing is attracted to surrender, not substitutes, purity, not performance.
Prayer: Lord, we reject every substitute that tries to take the place of Your presence in our lives. Cleanse our hearts and make our garments white before You. Let no mixture remain in us, no hidden compromise, no divided loyalty. We do not want something that only looks like power; we want the real anointing of the Holy Spirit. Set us apart again. Purify our motives, refine our desires, and make us willing vessels. Let Your Spirit rest upon our lives in a fresh way so that what we do carries Your authority, not our ability. Teach us to value Your presence above everything else. In Jesus’ name, amen.
