Reaching Solid Ground
And so it was that they all escaped safely to land. - Acts 27:44
The wood beneath their feet splintered into a thousand jagged pieces. For fourteen long nights, the relentless fury of hurricane-force winds battered the vessel, stripping away cargo, gear, and every shred of human certainty. Now, the violent surf slammed the wreckage against the shallow shoals of Malta. With the roaring water pulling at their clothes and the dark shoreline looming just yards away, two hundred seventy-six exhausted souls faced a final, terrifying choice. Some jumped into the churning waves to swim, while others clung desperately to drifting planks of broken timber.
No one watched from the comfort of a dry harbor. Every single person swallowed the salt of the sea, fought the current, and felt the raw terror of the final push.
Yet, as the morning sun broke across the Mediterranean coast, an incredible reality settled over the beach. Every person made it safely to shore. Not a single life was lost to the deep, exactly as the angel had promised Paul in the darkest hour of the storm. Scripture reminds us in Psalm 107:29-30 that God “made the storm be still, so that the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters grew quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.”
We often find ourselves in seasons where life feels like a pile of floating debris. The storm hits our families, our finances, or our health with such sudden violence that survival requires abandoning everything familiar. People spend days or weeks simply holding on, wondering if the waves will drag them under before help arrives. Fear whispers that this wreckage is the end of the story.
There are moments when God does not just help us endure the tempest, but He steps in to expedite the entire journey. Think of the disciples battling the wind on the Sea of Galilee, rowing until their arms gave out against a stubborn headwind. When Jesus stepped into their boat, John tells us that immediately the boat reached the land where they were heading. God has a way of cutting through the protracted suffering of a season, taking our remaining distance, and advancing us far beyond what our own strength could ever achieve.
When He makes a promise to bring people through the fire, He does not drop them halfway. He accelerates the rescue and carries them all the way to dry ground.
That trial someone is wading through right now may feel messy. The process of reaching the other side leaves people bruised, exhausted, and clinging to a broken piece of what life used to look like. But the God who parted the waters and guided every battered survivor onto the shores of Malta remains faithful to finish the work He started. The storm does not hear the final word. The shore does.
When the weight of a difficult season presses down, it helps to pause and remember that God is a finisher. He does not abandon His children in the middle of the sea, and He is fully capable of suddenly shifting the momentum in our favor. Taking that next step forward requires a deliberate focus on His track record rather than the roaring waves. Write down one specific promise of God on a small card and place it on the kitchen counter where it is visible every single day this week as an anchor for the heart.
Reflection
Think about a past storm where God brought you safely to the other side. How does remembering His faithfulness in that season change the way you view the rough waters you are facing today?
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You for being the God who rescues us when the ship goes down and the waves surround us. We confess that it is easy to look at the wreckage of our current circumstances and forget Your promises. Give us the strength to keep swimming, trusting that You finish what You start and that You can expedite our breakthrough to lead us safely to solid ground. In Jesus’ name, amen.
