Go a Little Further

"And when he had come near, he went a little further, and a stone’s throw away, he knelt down and prayed." Mark 14:35 (ESV)

Jesus teaches us a lesson in the power of going a little further. Being in the right place, like a garden of prayer or a city full of people, is not enough if our hearts stay comfortable and passive. The disciples were in the garden to pray, but Jesus went beyond the familiar, beyond the comfort, into a deeper place of surrender and dependence.

We see this again in Jericho. Jesus walked through the city, healing none because no one reached beyond their comfort. But then came blind Bartimaeus. He cried out persistently, and when the disciples tried to silence him, he went a little further, louder, with unwavering faith. His boldness met Jesus, and his blindness was healed.

The story continues on the road to Emmaus after Jesus’ resurrection. Two disciples walked in sorrow, unaware that Jesus Himself was with them. He spoke to them, taught them the Scriptures, and explained how all things pointed to Him. Only when they invited Him to stay did the miracle of revelation occur. The scripture even notes, “And when Jesus made as though He would have gone further,” showing that He was testing their willingness to go beyond the ordinary, beyond what they expected, in pursuit of Him (Luke 24:28-29, NIV).

Faith often requires us to go a little further than our comfort allows.

It calls for a desire that stretches past routine, past hesitation, and even past fear. Miracles, revelation, and deeper intimacy with Jesus come to those willing to reach, to cry out, to extend themselves a little more than they usually would. Your breakthrough, your healing, your encounter with Christ may be just on the other side of that small step out of comfort.

Take a moment today to ask yourself: Am I willing to go a little further? To reach beyond what feels normal, beyond what feels safe, in pursuit of Jesus? Step forward in faith. Cry out with passion. Invite Him in with your whole heart. He is waiting, and He will meet you there.

Prayer: Lord, help me go a little further than my comfort, my fear, and my hesitation. Give me boldness to cry out, to invite You fully into every area of my life. Open my eyes to see Your presence and Your miracles, and let my faith meet Your power today. Amen.
