Faith That Makes The First Move
“Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts.” 1 Samuel 17:45 (KJV)
David did not wait for perfect conditions. He did not wait for approval from the army, and he did not wait until the fear around him disappeared. While others stood frozen by the size of the giant and the noise of intimidation, David stepped forward in faith. He saw what others saw, but he believed something they had forgotten. The battle was not decided by size, weapons, or experience. The battle belonged to the Lord.
What made David different was not what he had in his hand, but who he had in his heart.
He took what he had, a sling and a few stones, and trusted God to fill in everything he did not have. He did not wait for more armor or better training. He moved in obedience with what was already in his hand. And when he did, God met him in the gap between his limitation and the giant’s threat. That is what faith does. Faith steps first and trusts God to finish what obedience begins.
We see the same principle with Israel at the Jordan River. God did not part the waters first and then ask them to step in. He told the priests to step into the water first. Joshua 3:13 says, “And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the Lord… shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off.” The miracle waited for movement. The water did not respond to fear. It responded to faith in motion.
David’s story and Israel’s crossing both reveal the same truth. God often waits for our step before He shows His power. Not because He lacks ability, but because He is forming trust in us. The giants do not fall while we stand still. The waters do not part while we remain on the shore. Faith is not passive belief. Faith is active obedience. So many people wait to feel ready, wait for more resources, or wait for fear to leave. But David reminds us that what God has placed in your hand, surrendered in faith, is enough when God is involved. The battle is not won by what you lack, but by the God who stands with you.
The question is not whether God can move. The question is, will you take the first step?
Prayer: Lord, give me the courage of David to face what others fear and trust You with what I have. Help me to step forward in faith even when I do not see the full plan. Teach me not to wait for perfect conditions, but to obey You in the moment. I trust You to fill in what I lack. In Jesus name, Amen.
