Expect The Wind
That day, when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with them. (Mark 4:35–36)
The morning started entirely normal with the sun shining and the calendar looking completely manageable. There was no warning label attached to the sunrise. Yet, by noon, an unexpected piece of news completely upended the peace of the day. Life has a way of shifting from calm to chaotic in a single heartbeat. Has that ever happened to you? We often move through our routines with an unwritten assumption that if we follow God, check off the right boxes, and try our best to live right, everything will stay neatly in the clear.
We tend to treat faith like a vending machine. We put in our good deeds, kindness, and obedience, expecting to receive a life of uninterrupted comfort, health, and smooth sailing in return. But Jesus never promised us an easy passage. In fact, right before the disciples found themselves fighting for air in the middle of a terrifying squall, Jesus Himself was the one who gave the command to launch out onto the water! Following Him does not mean you bypass the wind. It means He is right there in the boat with you when the wind starts to howl.
Storms come into every life. You might be sitting in the middle of a heavy trial right now, or perhaps you are just catching your breath after surviving one, wondering how you will ever rebuild from the debris. It is easy to look at the wreckage and feel isolated. Yet Scripture reminds us that we are never meant to navigate the deep waters alone. Think of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stepping into the blazing heat of the furnace. God did not stop them from entering the fire, but He stepped right into the flames beside them.
The goal of following Jesus is never about escaping hardship. The true prize of this life is proximity to the Creator of your soul. You are not graded on whether you reached the finish line without a single scratch or scar. The real measure of a grace-filled life is whether you end up looking a little more like Jesus than you did the day before. It is taking one faithful step after another, whispering the resolute prayer of surrender: "Lord, we believe You can rescue us, but even if You do not, we will still trust You."
Practical Application
So what does this truth mean for you? It means you stop exhausting yourself trying to manufacture a bubble of perfection. When the unexpected squall hits your home or your workplace, you do not need to panic or pretend you have it all together. Instead, take a deep breath, drop your shoulders, and quietly invite Jesus into the exact mess of your current moment.
Your one actionable step today is to pause the moment you feel the first gust of worry. Do not try to fix everything or figure out the entire week ahead. Just close your eyes for thirty seconds and tell God out loud that you trust Him with this specific, uncomfortable piece of your day. Let Him take the heavy oar out of your tired hands.
Reflection
Where are you currently trying to muscle your way through a storm in your own strength, and what would it look like today to simply surrender the steering wheel to Jesus?
Today's Prayer
Lord, I confess that I often look for the easy road and panic when the wind starts to blow against my plans. Thank You for not promising a storm-free life, but instead promising Your constant, unchanging presence right here in the boat with me. Forgive me for relying on my own strength and trying to control outcomes that belong entirely to You. Help me to trust Your heart even when the water around me feels overwhelming and uncertain. Draw me closer to You through the pressure, and teach me to rest in the quiet assurance that You are in absolute control. Amen.
