And Then Some (Part Two)
“If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.” Matthew 5:41 (NIV)
You never know who’s watching you. Every day, your choices and your effort speak louder than your words. There’s a powerful difference between people who just get by and those who excel. It’s three simple words: and then some.
Highly successful people do what is expected, and then some. Strong marriages happen when both spouses give what is required, and then some. Great students and great athletes reach the top because they push beyond what others are willing to do. That’s the “and then some” factor—the extra effort that separates excellence from average.
The same truth applies to your walk with God. Too many believers try to do the bare minimum. They do just enough to say they’ve served God or made it to church. But the presence of God falls where there is sacrifice. In the Bible, fire came down when people gave their best, when they went beyond what was comfortable. God still honors those who go the extra mile in faith, in obedience, and in love.
The world teaches a different philosophy: “Do the least you can and expect the most reward.” Many people give minimum effort but want maximum blessing. Yet God’s favor doesn’t rest on laziness or entitlement. It rests on those who give more than expected. Jesus taught, “If someone forces you to go one mile, go with them two.” That’s the heart of an “and then some” believer. You don’t just do your duty. You go beyond it because you’re doing it for the Lord.
Even in small or difficult jobs, the “and then some” attitude makes a difference. Maybe you’re in a job that feels beneath you, but God is watching how you handle it.
Promotion comes to those who are faithful where they are. Excellence honors God, even when no one else notices.
We need a generation of believers who reject the mindset of “give me more” and instead say, “I will give my best.” Decide today that you won’t live average. Be an “and then some” person at work, in your family, and in your faith. That’s where God’s blessing flows.
Prayer: Lord, help me to give more than what is required. Teach me to go the extra mile with joy and excellence. Let my work and my worship honor You. I don’t want to be average. I want to live an “and then some” life that brings glory to Your name. Amen.
