Why Not You?

“Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.” Isaiah 43:19

God has a dream for each and every one of you. Sometimes we believe that unless we’re Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, or Martin Luther King Jr., with some grand, world-changing vision, our dreams don’t really matter. But the truth is, God cares deeply about your dream. Whether it is going to college, owning a home, starting a business, leading a ministry, or raising a godly child, every dream of His children matters to Him.

George Bernard Shaw once said, “Dream of things that never were and ask, ‘Why not?’” Someone once looked at an old telephone with a long cord and thought, “Why can’t we have one without the cord?” Then another person asked, “Why not create a mobile phone that travels with people in their cars?” And yet another visionary imagined, “Why not invent a smartphone that not only makes calls but can connect to the internet?”

If you dare to dream, you will face challenges. There will be moments when your circumstances seem completely out of sync with the dream God gave you. Joseph had a dream, but then he was sold into slavery, falsely accused, and thrown into prison. It didn’t look like the dream was coming true, but every step, even the painful ones, was part of the journey toward it.

There will always be reasons to give up, but greatness belongs to those who keep going.

Ray Kroc was 54 when he left his sales job in Chicago to start a little hamburger chain called McDonald’s. Martha Stewart launched her brand, Martha Stewart Living, at 56. John Pemberton invented Coca-Cola at 55. Vera Wang started her fashion label at 40. Henry Ford revolutionized the automobile industry with the Model T at 45. Stan Lee didn’t create The Fantastic Four until just before turning 39. Samuel L. Jackson didn’t land a major role until age 43. Sam Walton founded the first Walmart at 44. Steve Carell didn’t become a household name as Michael Scott on The Office until he was 42. Laura Ingalls Wilder began writing in her later years, publishing her first Little House book at 65, stories that would go on to become beloved classics and a hit TV series.

So don’t let anything, whether it be lack of funds, fear, insecurity, age, or your current circumstances, keep you from pursuing the dream God has placed in your heart. As Norman Vincent Peale once said, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
