The Eyes of the Lord Are Still Searching
"The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him." 2 Chronicles 16:9
There is something almost breathtaking about this verse when you let it land as a literal description of what God is doing right now.
His eyes are running. Actively, continuously, urgently searching the whole earth. Not checking in occasionally. Not glancing around when things get quiet. Running, which implies movement and speed and intentionality. God is not passively waiting to be found by the few who manage to locate Him. He is actively, eagerly searching for hearts that are seeking Him.
And what He's looking for is not impressive. It's loyal.
Not perfectly disciplined. Not theologically sophisticated. Not free from struggle or doubt or failure. Loyal. The word in the Hebrew carries the idea of wholeness, of completeness, of a heart that hasn't been divided between God and everything else competing for its devotion.
Think about who was on the throne in Israel when this verse was first spoken. Asa, a king who had genuinely sought God for most of his life, had just made a series of decisions without consulting God at all. He had been loyal for decades. And then, in the pressure of a real crisis, he reached for what he knew instead of Who he knew.
The prophet Hanani shows up and says: the eyes of the Lord were running to and fro. And He was looking for you specifically, Asa. He wanted to show Himself strong on your behalf like He did with the Ethiopians. But this time, when He searched for a loyal heart to work through, He didn't find what He was looking for in you.
That is one of the most sobering statements in all of Scripture.
And it is followed immediately by one of the most hopeful ones. Because if God is still running, still searching, still actively looking for hearts that will seek Him, it means the invitation is still open. It means this is not a verse about what God used to do. It's a description of what He is doing right now, in this moment, while you are reading this.
His eyes are running. He is searching. And He is not looking for someone who has it all together. He is looking for someone who is still looking for Him.
The question this verse asks is simple: when His eyes pass over your life today, what will He find?
A heart that is loyal. A heart that is genuinely seeking. A heart that has not gotten so comfortable in its own capabilities that it stopped needing the One who gave them.
He's still searching. Be someone He finds.
Reflection
Set a timer for five minutes today and do nothing but seek God. No agenda, no list, no request. Just come before Him with the singular posture of someone who genuinely wants to be found by Him. Then pay attention to what shifts in you.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I want to be someone Your eyes find when You search the earth. Not because I'm impressive or because I have everything together, but because my heart is genuinely after You. Search me today. Find me. And show Yourself strong in the places where I most need You to. Amen.
