Stop The Bulldozer
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14
The powerful movie “The Monuments Men” tells the true story of a group of military volunteers who were given a mission unlike any other during World War II. President Eisenhower sent them into harm’s way with a simple but profound assignment: preserve the soul of civilization. These men understood that culture, history, and heritage matter. They knew that if these treasures were lost, a part of humanity would be lost with them. At the same time, Adolf Hitler was doing the opposite. He was stealing, looting, and destroying these same treasures in every nation he invaded. He wanted to erase history and replace it with his own twisted version of truth.
In one scene, an old cathedral had been damaged in the war, with only one wall still standing. As a bulldozer approached to demolish what remained, one of the men stepped in front of it, holding a document, and declared, “You cannot destroy this monument!” A high-ranking officer arrived and explained that clearing the area was necessary for the safety of his troops and that the demolition would proceed. But the monument man stood firm. He told the officer that he would go directly to the President with photographs and report that part of the cathedral remained and that the President’s directive to preserve history had been ignored. The general halted the bulldozer. The wall would stand.
Maybe your marriage or home has suffered deep damage. All that is left of it is a single wall, and it seems like hell’s bulldozer is coming right toward it. But it is at that moment that you have to stand and fight for what’s left. You can rebuild some walls.
Perhaps your family did not turn out the way you hoped, but don’t be too quick to give up on it.
You may not be able to fix everything at once, but you can reach out again. You can speak love again. You can forgive again. You can pray again. Just as those brave men fought to save something sacred, you, too, can fight for the sacred treasures in your own life. And you are not fighting alone. With God’s help, your family can be restored, and what was taken can be returned many times over.
