Step Out And Find Out

“Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.” Ecclesiastes 11:4

There’s something called the “Butterfly Effect.” In 1960, MIT meteorologists discovered that the flapping of a butterfly’s wings could affect wind currents thousands of miles away. It’s something so small and seemingly insignificant, yet it affects our atmosphere. God-ordained risks are like the Butterfly Effect. Small choices and changes in time become magnified and have significant consequences.

Ignoring a nudging of God can be what’s holding you back from living a great life and significantly impacting this world.

One courageous choice may be the only thing between you and your dream coming true.

Sometimes you need to push over the first domino. Little butterfly wings in Georgia shouldn’t be able to affect the wind current in South Africa, but they can. You may not understand it, but there is a domino effect that happens when you make the first move on a God-given opportunity. Don’t wait for the timing to be “just right.” The great warrior in 2 Samuel 23, Benaiah, encountered a lion on a snowy day. He could have pursued the lion when conditions were optimal. He could have waited on a day when the sun was shining, and he wouldn’t be slipping and sliding trying to fight a lion. But most of the God-given opportunities that come your way will not come when you think the timing is right.

Step out and find out. Instead of sitting back and wondering the rest of your life what could have been, take a step out and try it. Then, if you step out on the “Red Sea” and it doesn’t part, take a step back. Forward Conference is a youth conference we hold for teenagers every summer, and it started out as a big “maybe.” We stepped out and God showed up. A couple of weeks before our first conference, only 200 teens had pre-registered. But on the event day, over 3,000 showed up, and the rest is history. Now, we hold it in a massive arena near Atlanta, and over 13,000 teens from around the country come each year.

Stop living scared. Take a risk. Sinking is better than sitting. Just ask Peter. Peter realized that sinking is better than sitting and doing nothing. Jesus will always come to the aid of the person who steps out and tries. Abraham stepped out from his homeland, not even knowing where he was going. His courage allowed God’s dream for him to have “as many descendants as the stars in the sky” to come true. So step out and find out what great plans God has waiting for you.
