Monument Men and Women: Preserving What Matters Most

“This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.’” Jeremiah 6:16

There is a great movie called “The Monuments Men.” It’s about a group of men from the military who were mostly volunteers who were given a special assignment in WWII. Their job wasn’t to fight on the front lines. Instead, they were tasked with finding and protecting Europe’s cultural treasures- monuments, paintings, archives, cathedrals, and other priceless works of art. President Eisenhower commissioned them to go out and risk their lives to save as much of the culture of Europe as they could during a time of war. They knew the importance of preserving these treasures to protect their history and inspire future generations.

Hitler wanted to loot, rob, and destroy all the treasures of the nations he invaded. Sound familiar? We have an enemy who wants to rob us of everything good that God has placed in our lives. He is after our marriages, our families, and our faith. The devil doesn’t just want to hurt you. He wants to destroy the legacy you’re building. He wants to erase the image of God from your life and home. A good, godly family that believes in truth and walks according to God’s Word is a monument in this world. It is a rare commodity. A family that loves and honors God is a precious treasure.

God is looking for “monument” men and women who are willing to protect the treasures He has entrusted to them.

He is looking for men and women who will stand guard over their marriages and families. People who will resist temptation when it comes. People who will strive to live with integrity, purity, and faithfulness. The enemy wants to make you compromise just a little, and then a little more, until what once stood strong has been weakened. The enemy will send home-wrecking spirits to steal what you have built for years. He wants to rob you of your spouse and the confidence that your children have in you. He knows that your decisions today will affect generations tomorrow. That’s why we must be vigilant. We must protect our hearts and our minds. We must be careful with our words, texts, choices, and even our private thoughts. Don’t let the enemy sneak into your home through what seems small or innocent. Protect the treasures God has given you at all costs.
