Living To Be Spent

Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed." Acts 13:36 (NIV)

Charlie Kirk once said something that still echoes in my heart. He said he wished pastors would speak the truth so boldly that his voice would no longer be needed. He admired pastors who stood strong in a culture that resisted the gospel, and he longed for more of them to rise up. Charlie Kirk gave his life for truth in a time when many hesitate even to live for it. He died for freedom—the very freedom that Christianity gave to the world and that protects our ability to spread the gospel. My prayer is that his life and death would awaken pastors to speak without fear and stir Christians everywhere to live courageously for Christ. May this be a turning point where we choose faithfulness over comfort and boldness over silence.

The apostle Paul once wrote, “I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls” (2 Corinthians 12:15). His words show us what it means to pour out your life for others. It is not always easy, and sometimes it even comes with rejection or misunderstanding. Yet Paul knew that love and service are worth the cost.

David’s life is described in a simple but powerful way—he served the purpose of God in his generation, and then he fell asleep. That is what faithfulness looks like. It means using the time you are given, not for yourself alone, but for God’s will and the good of others.

You and I are also called to serve our generation.

We live in this specific moment in history for a reason.

God has placed us here with unique gifts, influence, and opportunities to make a difference. It may not look like leading a nation or speaking on a large stage, but it might look like raising a family in the faith, standing for truth when it is unpopular, or showing love in the face of indifference.

The measure of a life is not in its length but in its impact. Like Paul and David, will you gladly spend and be spent for the sake of others? Will you choose to serve your generation by living out God’s will?

Prayer: Lord, help me to use my days with purpose. Teach me to serve my generation faithfully, to love abundantly even when it costs me, and to walk in Your will. May my life be poured out for Your glory and for the good of others. Amen.
