How To Honor Your Parents

"Honor your father and mother, that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land." Ephesians 6:2-3

In Ephesians 6, God commands us: “Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise- that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.” This commandment is not just a suggestion or tradition. It is a divine instruction carrying a promise of blessing and longevity.

Honoring our parents is one of the Ten Commandments, demonstrating how deeply it matters to God.

When we honor our mothers, we show gratitude for the countless sacrifices they have made- the sleepless nights, the endless love, the wisdom shared, and the unselfish giving of their lives. So, how do we honor our mothers? Here are four heartfelt ways to begin:

1. Love them unconditionally. Whether they are young or old, vibrant or frail, a father and mother’s love is constant and unchanging. Loving them unconditionally means accepting them with grace, forgiving their imperfections, and appreciating their steadfast devotion.

2. Hug them affectionately. Simple acts of physical affection, like a warm hug or a gentle kiss, communicate what words sometimes cannot. Don’t wait for a special occasion. Reach out today and remind them that they are loved.

3. Spend time with them regularly. Invite them to go shopping, to play pickleball with you, or to go to lunch. Have a “mom and me” or “dad and me” outing where you take them to the movies or to a game. Call them all the time. Text them every time you think of them. Send them Instagram reels. Do whatever it takes to make them feel included in your life.

4. Listen to them attentively. Throughout our lives, our parents have been our confidantes. Now, it’s our turn to listen. Truly listen to their stories, advice, and needs. Showing that we value their voices will make them feel special and important. Encourage them in all their new endeavors and be their biggest cheerleader.

5. Help them cheerfully. Your parents have picked up your dirty socks and hauled you hours away to play a game. They have sat in carpool lines for hours and hours and worked overtime so you could have that car you wanted. Most likely, your parents have served you your entire life. So when they ask for your help with something, don’t act like it’s an inconvenience. But help them cheerfully.

Honoring our parents is a lifelong commitment, woven into every word, hug, and moment of understanding. When we do this, we not only obey God’s command but also invite His blessings into our lives. So today, take a moment to honor the two people who gave you life, nurtured your dreams, and shaped your heart.
